Romulus Revealed

Posted by Grey

Ever the torturous mastermind villain, Romulus, who was introduced in Wolverine: Origins series, and shown to have orchestrated the many tragedies in Wolverine's life, manipulating him at every turn for most of his life, is finally revealed in his first full appearance in the upcoming Wolverine: Origins #40.

Am not a big fan of so-called mastermind villain appearing conveniently as and when the latest writer on board deemed fit. Especially for a character of the status that Romulus, of whom had existed since prehistoric age, had a run as the emperor in Ancient Rome, and playing an allegedly big part behind the Weapon X Project. The fact that Romulus was conceived in the god-awful Jeph Loeb and Simone Bianchi's run in Wolverine, where the Lupus Sapien species were introduced, doesn't helped too. This upcoming final confrontation which incidentally is also the first ever face-to-face meeting (at least to our knowledge) with his arch-nemesis, seemed like a desperate move by Marvel editorial to end this major plot that had ran for some time.

To commemorate the event, Simone Bianchi, the visual creator of Romulus, will be the guest variant cover artist. In fact, the cover seemed more like a page from the artist'sketchbook. A pity that Romulus's design looks more like a cheap knock-off of the real deal.

Newsarama had a six-page preview of the issue which you might like to check it out.

Antichrist Campaign

Not on any actual religion-purging exercise, but rather, a closer look at the promo, in particular the posters for the upcoming Lars Von Trier's film.

The upcoming film by Lars Von Trier, Antichrist, had seen its fair-share of coverage from my earlier post. For this article, we are looking into its aesthetic quality of every movies' primary promotional item, the posters. You might thought that I was going to say the movie trailers, and that is easily a fair argument given the hordes of trolls hanging around the interwub for the latest trailers... But movie poster still remain indifferent as an unique advertising tool. The effect of putting the image into your mind in one glance is far more minimal and yet intriguing choice, as compared to the "everything and the bloody kitchen sink" trailer can do.

Somewhat explicit and graphically capable of putting across that eerie ambience of the film, the poster series, though deprived of the variable alternate treatment to many main stream films these days. had been an remarkable one.

Zombie (App Attack) Of The Week: iZombieland

Posted by Grey

Yes, folks, another zombie game for the iPhone. As if we all need more reasons to frown over this fact, it's a movie adaptation. Are we dead yet?

Zombieland, the upcoming zombie flick with a comedic twist starring Woody Harrelson (who is getting quite an exposure these days, all things considered) does after all, had a relevant theme to all the zombies out there. While the zombie epic, "Dawn Of The Dead" (the original one, mind you) introduced us to the sociopath nature of all zombies, when we learn the reason why they are coming out in hordes heading to the shopping mall, Zombieland brings you to the amusement park, thus the namesake.

Anyway, we are talking about this iPhone adaptation of the movie. While the screenshot surely resembles some kickass actions, we will review and revert.

Just stay undead.

Gaming Console Price War: PS3 VS Xbox 360: Enter Nintendo Wii

Posted by Grey

Welcome to the continuing chapter of the (hopefully) neverending battle between the gaming console. Reason for the joyous tone?
I got two words for you: Price War.

We ended with "Do you seriously think that Nintendo gonna let its Wii sit by, missing all this fun?".

Well, it sure doesn't take a prophet to deduce this out. Nintendo has announced that moving forward from September 27th, the price of Wii will drop by $50 to $200 in the U.S., while the price of Wii would drop in Japan to 20,000 yen (about $210) on October 1st. Interestingly, the announcement was made while Sony's head honcho, Kaz Hirai, were in the midst of his, reportedly boredom-filled speech in the disguise of "an announcement".

App Attack: Moto Racing Fever

A reportedly noteworthy motor racing simulator on iPhone? Now that's interesting.

Motor racing simulator for iPhone gaming had been few and far in between, with the most notable being Freeverse's Wingnuts Motochaser. Relatively rave reviews had stuck with this motor racer with a plot to boot. For a ZeroNineNiners (cost a meager $0.99 at the ITune Store), that's quite a deal there. Let see if it indeed makes the cut.

Evil Avengers Assemble

Posted by Grey

After the New, the Mighty and the Dark, what is in store for the good old Avengers?

Evil, at a cosmical level, so it seems.

From the preview images from Marvel, it sure looks like the long-running "War of Kings" saga depicting the cosmic struggle between the Shi'ar Empire, now ruled by Vulcan (the infamous third Summers brother) and his Imperial Guard, the Inhumans and the Kree, with run-in interference by the new Starjammers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Nova and the new Nova Corps (the cheap knock-off Marvel version of Green Lantern Corps) and Darkhawk is closing off with a direct crossing into the Dark Reign happening right now at your friendly neighbourhood 616 Universe.

Musashi: The Dream of the Last Samurai

Posted by Grey

The ultimate dream team of today's Anime scene stand united to take on the ultimate project...
The ultimate samurai, Musashi Miyamoto!

The Animation Nation 2009 brought forward my earlier expectation of an actual screening date for the much anticipated anime film, Musashi: The Dream of the Last Samurai, and with it, killed all hope of a public screening too. Not that it mattered to me anyway.

With practically a who's who list for the production team, this is one feature film that Production I.G. doesn't need its great brand name to market about. The main catch had to be the fact that Mamoru Oshii laying his hands on the legendary samurai, Musashi Miyamoto, , being the developer and writer of this feature film. For the uninformed, Mamoru Oshii, ever the prolific figure in anime industry, is the writer-director to last year's "The Sky Crawlers", an official selection of the 65th Venice International Film Festival, and the anime epic, Ghost In The Shell and its sequel. Not forgetting being the writer of the original anime feature behind the recent movie, "Blood: The Last Vampire", and my personal all-time favourite anime feature film, Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade. Prolific he might be, Mamoru had never work on any existing popular figure and the idea for him to work on the legendary Sword Saint, Musashi Miyamoto could prove to be an fascinating combination.

Directed by Mamoru Oshii's longtime partner-in-crime, Mizuho Nishikubo is the animation director of "Ghost In The Shell" films, "The Sky Crawlers" and more significantly, the mastermind behind the magnificent animation sequence in "Kill Bill: Volume 1". His fellow compatriot in "Kill Bill: Volume 1" is also onboard. Kazuto Nakazawa, famed for being the character designer of "Samurai Champloo", of which he also served as the animation director, he is also the animator of The Animatrix's "Kid's Story" and "A Detective Story", as well as the animator behind the Joe Hahn-directed music video for the Linkin Park song "Breaking the Habit." Kazuchika Kise, the animator behind Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone and Blood+, is also on board for the supervision of animation process here.

Musashi Miyamoto had proven to be such a fascinating character that, having such mythical qualities being the ultimate never-defeated swordsman yet strongly set in the stone of history with semi-military strategies, semi-martial arts manual, semi-philosophy ancient text, The Book Of Five Rings (五輪書), that the literature and entertainment scene had never stopped pumping features on the many contrasting aspects of him, with Takehiko Inoue's masterpiece, Vagabond, a loose adaptation of Eiji Yoshikawa's novel Musashi, being the most notable example.

Both Japanese and English versions of movie trailers are embedded below.

Animation Nation 2009

Posted by Grey

After last year's interestingly varied selection of international animation films (not just Japan thus the namesake, "Animation"), what can we expect for this round of Animation slugfest?

The 2008 outings were intriguing, successfully assembling the more popular genres of animation like Japanese anime films, "The Piano Forest" and Genius Party, the anthology jam of several famed anime creators, a free screening of hit videogame spinoff, "Dead Space" to the more obscure but nonetheless acclaimed films like the quirky "Sita Sings The Blues" and a retrospective of works from Aardman Studio.

Tall order to top, isn't it? This year's assembly of animation films might just do it.

Nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 2009 Academy Awards and winner for the Best Foreign Film at 2009 Golden Globes Awards, Israeli animated documentary film, "Waltz With Bashir" is no stranger to major film awards internationally. To those wondering what exactly is an animated documentary, there is only one way to find out. (And obviously, I don't mean that Pirate-bay way).

Another absolute eye-catcher to both the otaku crowd and philosophy rambling types and would be Production I.G.'s latest outing, "Musashi: The Dream of the Last Samurai". Featuring an ultimate dream team of anime's best and their iteration of the most beloved samurai in all historical records and literature of Japan, Musashi Miyamoto.

There's more, but if the above two doesn't raise your enthusiasm already, most probably, nothing will. Wait, probably the very uncharacteristic screening of "Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf: The Super Adventure", the mega-blockbuster of China that is based on a local tv animation series that had run for three years in the mainland, might clinched the deal for you.

There's definitely more interesting films in the line-up, so check it out at the official site.

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars Ablazing

Posted by Grey

Like myself, I'm pretty sure many a regular gamer will find themselves stumped by the name but however, if you happened to also be a longtime hardcore Anime freak (and when I mean "longtime hardcore", I meant being one ever since the 80s), then you probably stands a good chance knowing what it is.

Tatsunoko Production Co., Ltd. (株式会社竜の子プロダクション or 株式会社タツノコプロダクション ,Kabushiki gaisha Tatsunoko Purodakushon?), often shortened to Tatsunoko Pro. (竜の子プロ or タツノコプロ ,Tatsunoko Puro?), is a Japanese animation company founded in 1962 by acclaimed anime pioneer Tatsuo Yoshida along with his brothers Kenji and Toyoharu (Toyoharu adopted the pen name Ippei Kuri to distinguish himself from his brothers).

Enough rambling. A look at its portfolio of Anime series speaks best. Okay, Gatchaman anyone? Problem connecting that name? How about Battle of the Planets?

For those not so nostalgic, you might be aware of the recent Anime series, "Casshern Sins", a remake of 1973's Neo-Human Casshern (新造人間キャシャーン ,Shinzō Ningen Kyashān?), which incidentally was adapted into a movie in 2004.

But either way, you must have heard of Karas, a brilliant groundbreaking sixth part animation produced to commemorate the company's 40th anniversary of anime production. (The titular character's dark origin kicks the collective asses of all the billionaire orphan's clones out there)

Well, it seems that Capcom are indeed getting a little carried away with their "Versus" series of crossover games as the latest title in their long-running crossover series, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Cross Generation of Heroes, turned out to be a genuine genre crossover. Available at Arcades and Wii exclusive, platform-wise, this can be quite a monster to market given its source material's longstanding (albeit diverse)credentials. Apparently, Capcom USA is working to resolve Tatsunoko's licensing issues outside of Japan in order for an international release.

March On To The Civil War: Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2

Posted by Grey

It's Civil War. Say cheese, and strike a pose.

We all knew Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2, the much-anticipated upcoming sequel to its 2006's brilliant predecessor, will be incorporating storyline elements from Marvel's major crossover like 2005' Secret War and for the most part, 2007's Civil War, but do you know that the game writers are actually running wild with that ball, taking many "creative liberties" along the way? Some are especially done so in order for certain characters to get the treatment they needed for potential status boost, like Thor (who misses out the entire Civil War due to his then presumed-demise) and Deadpool, who got quite a cool scene if you check out the post-title in the game's official trailer embedded below.

Both mentioned heroes, are most probably getting that treatment due to their upcoming movie adaptation, or maybe just because they happened to be cool characters that shouldn't stray by the sidelines while the Marvel Universe goes to war. Speaking of trailers earlier on, the other game trailer that was released for Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 featured British rockband, Kosheen's Damage as the background music with some aptly cutscenes of the heartbreaking split of the superheroes, personified mostly by the pro-registration's Iron Man and the anti-registration's Captain America.

With the official release of the game today across North America, it's probably for the best to direct these awkward emotion into some positive ass-kicking (Marvel Superhero's, at that) .
