Jonah Hex The Movie: Undead Monday

Posted by Grey Monday, November 30, 2009

The inaugural entry for the eponymous Undead Monday. Before anyone go all maniacally wild over Megan Fox's involvement here, well, it's Jonah Hex, movie adaptation, so what's the undead connection?

Well, you'll see. Early reports indicated that John Malkovich will be playing the role of a voodoo master antagonist, who plans to liberate the Confederate South with an army of the undead. At least, that's for starters, as director Jimmy Hayward and good'ol Jimmy Palmiotti (the current writer for the DC comic of Jonah Hex) proved otherwise, setting the records straight by saying, "I don't know where the voodoo practitioner raising the army of the undead came from, but that has nothing to do with the film, John Malkovich's character is more of a terrorist who's upset about the Civil War than he is someone who's trying to fight and re-win the Civil War.".

Either way, Jonah Hex is a classic Western character who is a pioneer of the archetypal anti-hero, way back in 1972, heavily influenced by Clint Eastwood's Man With No Name in "The Dollars Trilogy", sharing his cynical and uncaring personality while bound by an extraordinary code of honor. Later directions for the character in the 1990s, written by Joe R. Lansdale and drawn by Tim Truman, brings Hex towards a darker realm, exposing himself to black magic, zombies and lovecraftian monsters.

Josh Brolin will be portraying Jonah Hex, complete with his half-disfigured look, while the aforementioned John Malkovich will be Quentin Turnbull, Hex's long-time nemesis in the comics.

And yes, Megan Fox is also cast as the romantic interest, Leila, a gun-wielding prostitute.

A look at the poster that was released.
