Otto; Or Up With Dead People: Zombie Of The Week

Celebrating human rights, first amendment, zombie free-thinking (not zombie-free thinking) with a zombie movie for the queer. Yes you read that right.

While The Daily Zombies obviously chronicles all the ups-and-downs of the Living Undeads, we do put an additional close eye on them every week, celebrating zombie kind by featuring the particular Zombie on a weekly basis. Therefore, as much as the subtitle of "Up With Dead People" sounded like a zombie apocalypse version of Pixar's "Up", we chronicle "Otto", the sure-fire queer cinema classic with this week's Zombie Of The Week.

Directed by Canadian writer, filmmaker, photographer, and former underground gay porn star himself, Bruce LaBruce, "Otto; or Up with Dead People" was a 2008 joint-production by Canada and German. Featuring a quirky enough plot even by the standards of the common zombie fare, this is by no means easy on the eye. Not even for the usual zombie film-watching types if they happened to have a problem sitting down with Brokeback Mountain.

The plot synopsis, courtesy of IMDB:
A young zombie named Otto appears on a remote highway. He has no idea where he came from or where he is going. After hitching a ride to Berlin and nesting in an abandoned amusement park, he begins to explore the city. Soon he is discovered by underground filmmaker Medea Yarn, who begins to make a documentary about him with the support of her girlfriend, Hella Bent, and her brother Adolf, who operates the camera. Meanwhile, Medea is still trying to finish Up with Dead People, the epic political-porno-zombie movie that she has been working on for years. She convinces its star, Fritz Fritze, to allow the vulnerable Otto to stay in his guest bedroom. When Otto discovers that he has a wallet that contains information about his past, before he was dead, he begins to remember details about his ex-boyfriend, Rudolf. He arranges to meet him at the schoolyard where they met, with devastating results.

The official poster for the movie.

And yes, that's a killer queer zombie movie tagline... "Bringing Sexy Back... From The Dead".

The trailer, though rated "G", featured some gay scene, so definitely not for the homophobic.
