ApocalyPS3 Now

Posted by Grey Tuesday, March 2, 2010

And on February 28th 2010, ApocalyPS3 is upon us.

That is, for all the owners of the original (Fat) PlayStation 3.

On February 28th 2010, many of the PlayStation 3 Fat models (only those belonging to 1st through to the 3rd generation original PS3 units) were reportedly suffering critical error that deprived owner any form of gameplay. While the initial problem only lies with the inability to connect to the PlayStation Network, the error soon escalated as users who had never been online also began to experience problems playing installed offline games. By this time, many users begin to notice that the console's clock had reverted to December 31 1999. Y2K Bug, anyone?

With the error code displayed 8001050F, affected users were unable to sign in, play games, use dynamic themes and view/sync trophies. It then became apparent that the internal system clock is the cause of the problem as whichever actions that required query of the system timer as part of the startup will feel the wrath of the ApocalyPS3.

With Sony providing a lackluster response toward the entire catastrophe, first confirming the issue, complete with the standard response. By March 1st, Sony confirmed that the problem was caused by the affected models erratically identifying 2010 as a leap year (years with a February 29th). Voila, all is well, and PS3 user can moved on mocking the Red Ring of Death.
