Tekken Punching Its Way To iPhone

"You got a new challenger!"

Regular arcade lurkers may find the above phrase familiar, whenever someone interrupt your one-man-asskicking session by challenging you on the game you are in the midst of. Annoying? Yeah but fun. Wonder will Capcom feel the same way when they know Namco's Tekken is officially entering the iPhone ring, following this week's release of Capcom's fighting game classic, Street Fighter IV?

According to Pocket Gamer, "a source close to Namco speaking on the condition of anonymity" has confirmed that a Tekken game developed for iPhone is fast approaching the end of its development and could be near its release date anytime soon.

Bearing in mind that iPhone gaming, with one of its major flaws being the serious lacking of an efficient arcade-style joystick, has not been an awfully great platform for fighting games, a particular game genre with a prerequisite regulation for having articulate controls over the system. While the latest offering by Capcom, Street Fighter IV, boldly challenges the issue head on (with remarkably good results, something we will be touching on in a later review of the game), you have to wonder, can Namco even out the odds?

Anyway, the idea of Namco finally unleash its fury upon the iPhone were discussed at length last August with the forming of the new division, Apple Games. With this development, one can't help but think of Blades Of Fury, iPhone's first ever 3D Fighter produced by Gameloft that had more than a handful of "reference and inspiration" from Namco's other fighter, Soul Calibur. The real mccoy might just be coming, after all.
