Cat Shit One Trailer

A noteworthy upcoming anime series with an innovative concept that is instantly arresting.

An adaptation of the three volume manga series written and illustrated by Motofumi Kobayashi, that was released in the US under the title of Apocalypse Meow, Cat Shit One is a twelve-episode CG animated series produced by Studio Anima. With the US title being an obvious riff on the film Apocalypse Now, you are right to assumed that the original manga were set during the Vietnam but with one hell of a twist: These cute and fluffy animals you see holding arms and in full combat gears, aren't playing for keeps or just are having fun in a "cute animals paint-ball war". It's the real fucking 'Nam war, it's just that the Americans are Rabbits, the Vietnamese are Cats, the French are, well, Pigs, and the Chinese are Panda. Other nationalities presented in their animal forms are:-

Japanese: Monkey and Gorilla
Russian: Bear
Korean: Dog
British: Rat
Australian: Kangaroo

Wikipedia comes in handy for some of the not-so-logical choice of animals for the respective nationalities.

The depiction of Americans as rabbits is actually a pun on the Japanese word for rabbit. The Japanese word for rabbit is "うさぎ," which can be romanized as "usagi," or USA GI.
The British characters were depicted as rats to honor the Desert Rats, the nickname of the World War II British 7th Armoured Division. Similarly, the Germans were depicted as Foxes to honor Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, nicknamed the Desert Fo

What made the series even more interesting would be the fact that the story is a hard and realistic presentation to war, making it a grim and gritty read. Originally published in Japan in 1998 by Softbank Publishing, the series were later followed up a sequel titled "Cat Shit One 80", continuing the misadventures of the three main protagonists as they became involved in various low intensity conflicts in the 1980s.

While the computer-generated anime adaptation will be keeping the war-weary tone of the original manga, it will be set in the Middle East rather than Vietnam with the setting being in 1991 instead.

In the meantime, check out the trailer for the anime.
