WWE Fatal 4-Way Postmortem

Posted by Grey Thursday, June 24, 2010

It may be the recent Bryan Danielson/NXT Invasion debacle, or the FIFA World Cup results prediction craze, or the fact that I was recently down with Chicken Pox, or just a combination of all the above mentioned circumstances, but I have indeed done the impossible: Missing out the PPV prediction of WWE's latest Pay-Per-View, Fatal 4-Way, which was held on Sunday, June 20th. In penance, we will conduct a postmortem review juxtaposed with what would be our initial prediction.

"Fatal 4-Way", part of WWE's renewed efforts to pump up PPV buy-rates by providing its PPVs with a signature gimmicks. So what's the gimmick here? It's as literal as they get: Having major title matches contested in "Fatal Four Way" matches. Supposedly, the idea is that every contender in the match will be having a 25% chance of winning, no matter how ridiculous this math formula works.

So how was the show, since this is after all, a postmortem of the show instead of the usual preview? From general reports from most wrestling journalists, kind of under-whelming. From the results, lots of shake-ups in the major titles yet under-whelming nonetheless. Why is that so? Let's take a look into the details. Oh, as per our usual tradition in our PPV prediction, we will be inserting out prediction of the results with the respective matches. And yes, we sucked big time with a record 7 wrong prediction out of 8, a reverse of fortune as compared to the almost dead-on 6 out of 7 for the previous event, Extreme Rules. So what's this month's special factor that are affecting our judgment? It's the fact that Four-Way Matches are, quite likely, one of the best opportunity writers get to transfer the title without making the face champion look bad, or even smoothly transferring title from one heel to another to gather further heat for that particular feud.

Without further ado, the game.

WWE Champion John Cena vs. Randy Orton vs. Sheamus vs. Edge

The Winner: Sheamus!
Frankly, the last person I would thought of winning the match. Well, the man-sized jar of mayonnaise has surprised me once again, taking off with his second world title reign.

Predicted Winner: John Cena to retain, or a non-finish due to run-in interference from NXT season one rookies
Obviously, wrong, and that what I should be considering about Four Way Matches (as mentioned earlier) just did not get into my head enough.

World Heavyweight Champion Jack Swagger vs. Big Show vs. Punk vs. Rey Mysterio

The Winner: Rey Mysterio!
As bad as it might make me look, I'll have to admit the fact that Mysterio is once again, the last person I would thought of winning this one. Well, I guess that's compensation for missing his long-promised vacation due to breaking The Undertaker's face.

Predicted Winner: Jack Swagger to retain, or a non-finish due to run-in interference from Kane
I'm wrong again, for missing out the exact point I mentioned earlier: 'that Four-Way Matches are, quite likely, one of the best opportunity writers get to transfer the title without making the face champion look bad, or even smoothly transferring title from one heel to another to gather further heat for that particular feud'. Kane did interfere, but only to drive Punk away.

WWE Intercontinental Champion Kofi Kingston vs. Drew McIntyre

The Winner: Kofi Kingston retains.
And even manage to pull off a semi-closure for the unbearably long-winded Theodore Long's personal feud with McIntyre himself.

Predicted Winner: Kofi Kingston
They didn't put the title on Kingston for fun, after all this seemingly never-ending "chosen one" storyline.

US Champion The Miz vs. R-Truth

The Winner: The Miz retains...

Predicted Winners: The Miz
But of course. The very same logic as the Intercontinental title: They wouldn't go through all the trouble stripping R-Truth of the title in his hometown during last RAW, and let's not talk about the whole "US Champion Bret Hart" fiasco. Thinking back, it is highly possible that Vince McMahon foresaw the whole Owen Hart's widow lawsuit against WWE coming, thus the firing of Bret Hart.

WWE Divas Champion Eve Torres vs. Gail Kim vs. Maryse vs. Alicia Fox

The Winner: Alicia Fox!
By the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth! Like I care.

Predicted Winners: Eve Torres
This is quite a call to made, as it is more than blatant that I don't give a ratass concern towards the WWE Divas if business there simply refused to pick up.

That's it, as only five matches were announced before the PPV commenced. Not unlike the previous few PPVs, there are a couple of matches that were unannounced. We will just list the results below.

Unified Tag Team Champions The Hart Dynasty (Tyson Kidd, David Hart Smith and Natalya) vs. The Usos (Jimmy and Jey Uso) and Tamina

The Winners: The Hart Dynasty
The Tag titles wasn't on the line, so this is just the start of a hopefully long feud between the tag teams, which is a rare thing in WWE these days.

Evan Bourne vs. Chris Jericho

The Winner: Evan Bourne!
Probably in part due to Jericho's upcoming TV deal as the host of ABC's Downfall, he has been somehow shifted to a lower card, jobbing to the modern day "Brooklyn Brawler" Evan Bourne, the ultimate jobber who has recently received an almost godly push.

The Rundown

Not much of a rundown, since this is pretty much a postmortem. Nevertheless, the PPV were kind of a downer, given the white hot NXT invasion in process.
