Castlevania: Lords of Shadow Preview

Posted by Grey Tuesday, July 20, 2010

It's time to whip up another adventure in good'ol Dracula's favorite hideout... Only that it is a whole new ball game this time round.

And not just game genre-switching different, a'la the poorly received "Castlevania Judgment" exclusively for Wii.

The latest installment of the critically acclaimed long-running series, Castlevania, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, boldly go where none of its predecessor have gone: No, not the 3D gameplay of which the franchise has had already its fair share of attempt, with Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness, which respectively met with less than favorable results. This is a complete reboot of the series, with zero connection to the canon continuity painstakingly set up by the numerous developers since the release of the original Castlevania in 1986.

A third person action adventure title featuring 50 levels of gameplay composed of a mixture of combat, platforming and puzzle elements, developer Mercury Steam has turned Castlevania into something more akin of the likes of Devil May Cry or God of War than the platforming the series is famous for. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. Especially with the advisory role of Hideo Kojima (famed creator of the Metal Gear Solid franchise) and the Kojima Productions in place.

Already awarded as one of The Daily Zombie's "Top 13 Trailers From E3 2010", the trailer dutifully illustrates the somewhat sombre tone of the story, not without displaying some major vampire-slaying actions. And with the impeccable Sir Patrick Stewart filling as the narrator and some of the best-looking CG around, this is one trailer to behold. Without further ado, check out the trailer as embedded below.

Featuring a stellar cast of voice actors including Robert Carlyle (of "The Full Monty" and "28 Weeks Later" fame), Natascha McElhone (Californication, Ronin), Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films), and the aforementioned Sir Patrick Stewart, amongst others.

In the meantime, let's also take a look at some of the gorgeous character designs and game arts that have been released.
