Twisted Metal Preview

Stop clowning around while driving. Oh wait, scratch that, cuz the fucking King of all vehicular combat games is set to return in 2011.

For players who enjoyed the boom era of PlayStation 2 back in the 90s, one particular game genre that has since ceased to exist come to mind: Vehicular Combat. With the success of 1995's original Twisted Metal, and its sequel, Twisted Metal 2, which were released in the subsequent year, series creator David Jaffe has single-handedly introduced an unique genre of action gameplay, thereby unwittingly unleashed a drones of clones following the very similar car combat experience.

With the upcoming release of Twisted Metal on the PlayStation 3 (exclusively, as per previous installments) next year, Jaffe and his current studio, Eat Sleep Play, will be reimagining his early hit creation (Jaffe was also the director of both the original God of War and its sequel), updating the vehicular combat concept to new bold ways.

White it is still unclear on whether the latest installment will be a direct continuation of the series or a new presentation of the very same concept, fan-favorite vehicles Sweet Tooth and Junkyard Dog will be making their appearance, along with a somewhat new storyline to boot. From the trailer, a helicopter will also be in the line-up, ensuring more road-to-air crazy action. In this installment, players will be choosing their allegiance with four factions: The Dolls, the Clowns, the Skulls, and the Preachers. And instead of the usual routine of sixteen unique drivers for each of the sixteen cars, each car will be driven by one of the four chosen factions with a driver and gunner. Multiplayer will also continue to be the key feature of the title, and players can expect many new online modes with this one.

Check out the somewhat candid trailer of the game, after the jump.
