Batman: Arkham City Announced

Posted by Grey Sunday, August 8, 2010

The highly anticipated sequel to 2009's Batman: Arkham Asylum, named as the "Most Critically Acclaimed Superhero Game" in the Guinness World Records, and more importantly, the "Game Of The Year" by The Daily Zombies, has finally gotten an official title, along with a release date.

Batman: Arkham City, a direct sequel to the 2009's surprise hit, Batman: Arkham Asylum, is currently in development by Rocksteady Studios, for a Fall 2011 release on the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, as announced by Publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment earlier this morning. Along with the announcement, an official site of the game has also been launched.

Described by voice actor Kevin Conroy, who will be reprising his role as Batman, to be "really, really dark", the sequel will have players taking Batman into Arkham City, the "the new maximum security 'home' for all of Gotham City's thugs, gangsters and insane criminal masterminds". It would seem that in the aftermath of the climatic battle of the last game, Arkham Asylum has relocated right in the heart of Gotham City. The press release from Warner Bros. also indicated the game will be featuring story that "draws together a new all-star cast of classic characters and murderous villains from the Batman universe, as well as a vast range of new and enhanced gameplay features to deliver the ultimate experience as the Dark Knight".

Players can expect to see more members of the Dark Knight's infamous Rogues Gallery, with a battered Joker (voiced by Mark Hamill, in a last voice-acting stint as Clown Prince of Crime), being nursed by Harley Quinn, expected to be playing a significant antagonistic role as Gotham, as noticed in the announcement teaser trailer (that was featured early last year right here), gradually descend into madness and chaos. As of now, Catwoman, Mr. Freeze (voiced by Maurice LaMarche), Talia al Ghul (Ra's al Ghul's daughter, voiced by Stana Katic), Two-Face, and The Riddler (voiced by Wally Wingert), have been confirmed to be appearing in the sequel.

Judging by the amazing covers from September issue of Game Informer, Catwoman will be having an extended major role in the sequel, with some online speculation that the feline one might be involved in a co-op gameplay mode with the Caped Crusader. Let's take a look at these awesome covers after the jump.
