Spartacus Star Dropping Out Of Season Two Due To Recurrence Of Cancer

A particular sad news for all regardless if you are a fan of the much talked-about original TV series from Starz, Spartacus: Blood and Sand, or not.

A most unfortunate news to report: Andy Whitfield, the star who brought the historical rebel figure of Spartacus to life in the delicious entertaining Spartacus: Blood and Sand, is dropping out of season 2 of the well-received original series from Starz, due to recurrence of cancer, as reported by IGN.

Having earlier diagnosed with the considerably treatable early-stage non-Hodgkin lymphoma, Welsh actor Andy Whitfield has remarkably braved through his treatment, having gained a clean bill of health and was expected to be back on the set of Spartacus: Blood and Sand by October this year. During July's San Diego Comic-Con, he even made an appearance to promote the series. However, it was reported that his cancer has since recurred this month.

Whitfield and Starz have released a joint statement on the most unfortunate situation.

From Whifield, "It's with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as Spartacus and all the wonderful people involved. It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey. Thank you sincerely for the support so far."

And from Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht, "Our hearts and prayers are with Andy and his family during this difficult time. Andy is not only an incredible actor whose portrayal of Spartacus made an indelible impression on Starz audiences, he is also an amazing human being whose courage, strength, and grace in the face of adversity have inspired all of us."

Due to his treatment earlier, Starz delayed production on Season 2 and has ordered a six-episode prequel series, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, which is currently filming for a January debut.

However, Starz have indicated that a decision on the next move has not been made yet. Therefore, speculation over whether the role of Spartacus will be recast or that the second season of the series will be postponed in the meantime will be only announced later.

Having recognized the potential of Andy Whitfield from his very underrated 2007 Australian production, the dark supernatural film, Gabriel, and appreciating the hard-hitting, no-nonsense Spartacus: Blood and Sand that went out of its way to prove that it ain't no 300 or Gladiator clone, our hearts to Whitfield on his swift way to recovery. Do feel free to unleash hell on your way.
