Melissa Peacock: Zombie Of The Week

Posted by Grey Friday, October 15, 2010

This week, we turn our undead spotlight of the week at a most unique being who digests brain juices. A real-life zombie? Well, in a loose way of saying.

Who is Melissa Peacock?

Well, for starters, the 17-year-old young lady ain't no zombie. But depending on your very definition of a zombie, she might just be considered one if your definition of a zombie is one who digests brain juices. And before you get all caught up in a Zombie Apocalypse frenzy, she's only digesting her own.

Suffering from severe migraines due to a rare brain condition known as intracranial hypertension since she was nine, the teenager from Bradford often suffered blurred vision as the build-up of spinal fluid in her skull strained against her optic nerve.

After nine operations to remove the fluid failed, doctors decided on a seemingly diabolical solution to the problem: By draining the fluids directly into her stomach where it will be digested along her meals! So how is this working? Medics have insert a tube, that is permanently embedded inside her body, connecting her brain to her peritoneal cavity, carrying the fluid through her body. These fluid will then be absorbed through the lymph and vascular system once they are in her abdomen. Here's a picture that can draw a much detailed picture.

And a picture of the thin tube.

You might be wondering out loud on this bizarre and seemingly gross treatment. But the young lady certainly has her reasons for taking on such unique solution.

'I was a bit shocked when I realised exactly what the doctors were planning on doing. My friends think the fact that I digest fluid from my brain is a bit weird - but my quality of life is so much better since I had the shunt put in place, I don't care. The pain was just unbearable at times, so I agreed to go ahead with the operation. Before, there were weeks at a time where I just couldn't get out of bed because of the pain - and even when I did, I couldn't do all the things my friends did.'
