Begin the finger-pointing game as Phoenix Wright crosses path with Professor Layton.

Argue all you want on the fact that Layton and Wright belonging to different era and all, this upcoming puzzle/adventure game is scheduled to be released sometime next year.

Developed by Level-5 and Capcom and published by Capcom for the Nintendo 3DS, the game, Professor Layton VS Gyakuten Saiban (レイトン教授 VS 逆転裁判) brings together two popular peculiar characters belonging to respective niche gaming genres into one epic adventure crossing both franchises and game genres.

Professor Hershel Layton, the eponymous protagonist from the best-selling Professor Layton (レイトン教授 Reiton-kyōju) series from Nintendo and Level-5, is a renowned archaeologist and a well-mannered gentleman, often accompanied by his curious apprentice Luke while solving puzzling mysteries across an alternate Victorian Great Britain.

Phoenix Wright, the maverick defense attorney in the popular Ace Attorney (known in Japan as Gyakuten Saiban 逆転裁判, thus the crossover title) series from Capcom, is usually found in high tension courtroom dramas cross-examining witness for "contradiction" in an futuristic metropolis (depending on the version, Japan or Los Angeles) set in 2016.

Announced yesterday by Ace Attorney designer Shu Takumi at Level-5 Vision alongside Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino, the game's theme will reportedly be puzzles that are full of contradictions.

Taking place in a different universe from their world, both Professor Hershel Layton and Phoenix Wright find themselves in a medieval world. While Phoenix Wright takes on a case to defend a client in witch trials, Layton along with Luke, has to solve the mysteries of this strange new world. Set in a medieval city populated with witches known as Labyrinth City, an evil villain known as the Story Teller, with an amazing power where everything he writes with his pen becomes reality, is behind "The Trial of the Witch" in a tale of magic and danger.

The game will be featuring a combination of gameplay elements from both series including the trademark puzzles from the Professor Layton series as well as trials from the Ace Attorney series.

Check out some of the character designs and game screen that have been released from the announcement, along with a trailer (a little shaky, though) of the game after the jump.
