Help Deadpool Decide Which Title Of His Should Be Cancelled

Posted by Grey Thursday, November 18, 2010

True Believers, pick your poison.

We have seen how comic fans brutally voted the second Robin, Jason Todd, to die in 1988's A Death in the Family story arc. Now see how Marvel make us, fans of The Merc With a Mouth, vote which title of his massive body of monthly comics should be cancelled. Out of his four monthly titles, both Deadpool Corps and Deadpool Team-Up are now walking the green mile.

Here's the press release:

Deadpool has finally done it! The Merc With a Mouth is now in more monthly comics than the human mind can handle! To rectify that, we went straight to Mr. Wade Wilson himself and told him he has to choose one of his ongoing series for cancelation, either DEADPOOL CORPS or DEADPOOL TEAM-UP.
Alas, Deadpool can't make this decision alone: He needs your help!
Using the most advanced science Deadpool understands--online fan polls--we're going to decide which comic to keep and which to kill.

While this quirky move of Marvel certainly displayed the self-styled House of Ideas'Self-depreciating sense of humor, it is more of a marketing strategy more than anything else, if Rob Liefield's words can be accounted for. According to Bleeding Cool, the original creator of Deadpool and artist of Deadpool Corps has spoken:

On his Twitter:

Just checked out that poll. That’s a charade. The decision has already been made.

And I honestly thought I’d seen everything possible in this business….

The TRUTH shall set you free. And the truth is that all discussions and correspondence on DPC has it as a 12 issue mini-series. Confused.

And on the Bleeding Cool forums:

Hey everyone, long time no chat.

First off, I’d like to point out that my last issue, #9 has been completed. I asked off DPC in the summer and stayed until #9. The book was always referred to as a 12 issue maxi series, like Merc w/a Mouth before it. I did covers #1-12. 12 was referred to as the final cover.

I’m confused as to the poll. But a stunt is a stunt and Marvel is free to do as they please. Maybe it will rally support. It’s certainly grabbed attention. Never know. I just hope that Victor and Marat’s work on DPC is completed.

And those of you who supported both books, thank you.

Well, strange marketing tactics, nonetheless.
