Jon Favreau Not Directing Iron Man 3

Jon Favreau has left the building.

Amid rampant rumors of Marvel Studio is working to provoke Jon Favreau (the director of the Iron Man films) into leaving the Iron Man 3 project due to the director's rising price tag, Favreau has officially confirmed his departure from the "Iron Man" franchise via Twitter.

Speaking to Hero Complex, Favreau explained his decision by indicating that he opted to to work on the Disneyland inspired Magic Kingdom instead of Iron Man 3, and that "this is no snap decision of the result of fractured relations". The reason behind the decision is that he hoped to "find something that lights a fire [inside him]" and to "blow people away, which is easier to do with a project that isn't loaded with built-in expectations".

As for his relationship with Marvel as it stands:

"Marvel and I both came of age together. The years that we shared were a pivotal experience. Kevin has a firm grasp on the many franchises and how they all interweave and I am happy that I had the opportunity to establish the world that these characters can now play in…. ‘Iron Man' has given me tremendous opportunities and Kevin and I are enjoying a lot of momentum in our careers thanks to the ‘Iron Man' films. I look forward to seeing what others can do playing in the same world."

Earlier, New York Magazine reported from an inside source that Marvel "had been pushing a confusing and packed vision of the third film as a tactic to provoke Favreau into leaving the project".

While Favreau may not be making Iron Man 3, he would still be working for the same employer as Disney is the parent company of Marvel. In the meantime, Robert Downey Jr. is expected to reprise the role of Tony Stark for Joss Whedon's "The Avengers" sometime next year for a 2012 release date, while Iron Man 3 is currently scheduled to be released a year later. With Downey Jr. reportedly having contractual approval over the director of the film, it remains to be seen who will join on-board to replace the director.
