Space Battleship Yamato Preview: Poster, Trailers & Synopsis

Posted by Grey Saturday, December 4, 2010

The live-action film adaptation of the classic anime series, Space Battleship Yamato, has opened on Japan on December 1st. Let's take a sneak peek at the ambitious Japanese project.

Space Battleship Yamato (宇宙戦艦ヤマト Uchū Senkan Yamato), a Japanese anime TV series chronicling the survivalist space opera surrounding the eponymous space ship that was originally released in 1974 in Japan, is better-known to the Western audiences as "Star Blazers", when it was imported to the United States in 1979. One of the original pioneer in driving more mature overtones over its peers during the same period, Space Battleship Yamato remained influential and popular throughout the decades as it continues to spun off numerous sequels in variating formats.

Directed by Takashi Yamazaki (山崎 貴), the director of Sci-Fi film, Returner, in 2002, the live-action adaptation hailed a record budget over 2.2 billion yen (US$22 million) with the bulk of it being utilized in realizing the outer space dogfight from the original TV series. With notable national heartthrob Takuya Kimura cast as the main protagonist, Susumu Kodai, and Meisa Kuroki as the female lead character Yuki Mori, the film also featured Aerosmith's frontman, Steven Tyler, in a solo effort for its officila theme song entitled "Love Lives".

The plot synopsis, from the official site:

It is the year 2194. The Gamilons, an enemy of undetermined form, begin an invasion of Earth. The nations of Earth pool their forces and fight back, but their armies are defeated and most of humanity wiped out.

Five years later, in 2199, the Earth has been polluted by space-to-planet bombs, and those who remain alive have fled underground. Even the former top pilot, Susume Kodai, has left the military. One day as he is exploring aboveground, a mysterious object falls out of the sky. This is a communications capsule from the planet of Iscandar, 148 000 light years distant. Apparently, on Iscandar there is equipment that will eliminate the radiation. The Defense Force of Earth equips the Space Battleship Yamato with a previously unknown propulsion system, a "wave-motion engine" based on plans found in the capsule. Kodai rejoins the Force, and resolves to set out aboard the Yamato. With the fate of the Earth in their hands, the crew blasts off for distant Iscandar. They have one year until radiation drives humanity to extinction. Kodai's great battle has begun.

Carrying humanity's last hope with it, the Yamato blasts off!
