Royal Rumble 2010 Preview

Posted by Grey

After a much-needed six week's hiatus, The Daily Zombie's WWE PPV Preview returns, for the big one. It's Royal Rumble, baby.

The first pay-per-view (PPV) of the year, Royal Rumble, in its twenty-third iteration, will be taking place on January 31, 2010. At times even more interesting than the so-called "Showcase Of The Immortal", WrestleMania itself, Royal Rumble, with its wild and highly unpredictable signature main event, is indeed one hell of an event to watch out for. Commonly known as the official start of the WWE's Road to WrestleMania, Royal Rumble is the second-most important pay-per-view in WWE, bearing the responsibility of setting the tone for the upcoming extravaganza, kicking off the build-up of several potential feuds, and providing us with the name of the one wrestler that will be headlining WrestleMania.

Anyway, The Daily Zombie's WWE PPV Prediction for WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs, stumbled quite an upset, with a hit rate of 50%, with three out of six match right on the money. Well, if there is indeed money involved, I'm pretty sure many people would have gotten themselves bankrupted with Sheamus's victory over Cena last month.

Let see how we shall fare this time round?

30-Man Royal Rumble Match

Royal Rumble Match: Consisting of thirty men, beginning with two in the ring. At regular timed intervals, one of the remaining 28 wrestlers enters the ring, with the objective of eliminating all other opponents. When all others have been eliminated, the winner of the event will get an one-way-ticket to headline WrestleMania, being the number one contender to the title of his choosing.

Everybody's favorite match of the year seemed almost like a Year End Annual Dinner & Dance for the WWE employee, and the fans. This is where past feud got reignited, future feud gets started and current feuds intensified. And for crying out loud, all I'm hoping is that whoever wins to belong to the first fifteen to appear as opposed to last fifteen, or even worse, entrants #28 to 30. For the simple reason that this is simply cheap, like Cena's "surprise return" two years back, or Undertaker's similar victory few years back.

One of the most interesting, everlasting feature the Rumble would be its unpredictability and the potential character drama that might occur. We are always in awe, watching tag-team partners turning on each other (for example, the Brothers Of Destruction and, well, the Hardys, a scene that will unfortunately never be repeated) and the usual feud extending across the match.

There are so many ways the match can go, given WWE's direction for the upcoming three months. While Shawn Michaels (HBK) is currently the hot favorite to win the rumble due to his renewed obsession to face the Deadman, Undertaker at WrestleMania, there are many factors that can yet deter the events. Should HBK eliminates Triple H, intriguing storylines or even feuds might happen. Should HBK gets eliminated by HHH, likewise, and an added bonus will be seeing HBK, kicking and screaming in order to get Undertaker into the rematch. However, should Undertaker loses his championship to Mysterio (however unlikely that can be), would HBK redraw himself from the Rumble? That, in fact, is the problem, when the characters becomes the primary focus instead of the title. And we are just scrapping the surface of just one out of the thirty participants.

With some of the most star-studded confirmed roster participating in the match, this year's Rumble promised to be one of the most unpredictable Rumble ever. Therefore, allow us to break some tradition in our predicted winners below, by rounding a number of five potential winners in the order of their likely chance of winning. Nevertheless, we are predicting that the last four in the ring will HHH, HBK, Cena and Batista. Cena and Batista, will likely cancel each other out, to build up for a likely cross-brand promotional match at WrestleMania, leaving HHH and HBK to the scenarios mentioned in our first two choices below.

Predicted Winners: 1) Triple H
As much as you moan at the mention of the name up there, be assured that we, moan at it, as well. As good as HHH has been, with his game, we tend to think that he doesn't need this now. However, it is still most likely for this to happen, in order for HHH to face his gym buddy, Sheamus, at the WrestleMania main event. As with HBK's case above, should Orton wins the title instead, things are likely to be change here. We sure as hell hoped that we are wrong here.

Predicted Winners: 2) HBK
This is what our hearts are screaming for. One more time. One last champion reign by the Showstopper. And what better way to do it than at the WrestleMania, for Mr. WrestleMania himself?

Predicted Winners: 3) Cena
Should this happen, Cena will likely be challenging Undertaker to continue the purported feud angle set up earlier on a 3-hour RAW special, and in turns might cause the feud angle breaking up DX.

Predicted Winners: 4) Edge
Yes, Edge, the much-rumored returning superstar. If he indeed participate and win, this is likely to be one of those #30 entrant instances. However, this angle is not likely, as appearing and attacking or even eliminating Chris Jericho, would be enough impact from the Rated-R Superstar.

Predicted Winners: 5) Ted Dibiase
What better time to complete the inevitable, often-teased break-up of Legacy by having Ted to face Orton for his newly-won title (should he defeat Sheamus)? Again, not as likely as the first three choice, as I don't really see WWE putting its big money match on a relatively untested young man.

WWE Champion Sheamus vs. Randy Orton

I was dead, dead, dead wrong when I predicted the defeat of Sheamus at the hands of Cena last PPV, is "just like what happened to Umaga back then". Sheamus, while still untested in his champion reign, faces a genuine roadblock in his path. And an interesting heel-vs-heel booking at that.

Predicted Winner: Sheamus
Ok, I'm not overcompensating my grave mistake last PPV, but I don't really see the point of building a new heel champion over the number-one face and then making him lose the title to the number-one heel.

World Heavyweight Champion Undertaker vs. Rey Mysterio - World Heavyweight Championship Match

The bizarre love triangle between Batista, Mysterio and Undertaker continues, with CM Punk taking the stable highway, along with his newly-born Straight Edge Society, complete with a recovering retard (damn, is there such a thing) and a voluptuous skinhead diva, and Chris Jericho shifting down midcard to feud with R-Truth.

Nonetheless, this will be a pretty decent match, in fact, this is most likely to be the best match of the night, other than the Rumble itself.

Predicted Winner: Undertaker
All signs lead to this result. There's no other way about it. Sorry, Rey, but DX was right about their prediction.

ECW Champion Christian vs. Ezekiel Jackson

While ECW's future remains to be unclear, the ECW title (yeah I'm not pretending to treat it like a genuine World Title now) has been firmly held by Christian for, like six hundred years by now. A good thing, for the title, for the show, and for Christian, the consistent performer who should really escalate to another level. And the only way to do it, would be by dropping this title. However, I don't see how Jackson can be the next torch-bearer of the dying brand.

Predicted Winners: Christian
Christian is more likely to drop the title next month, in the Elimination Chamber.

Women's Champion Michelle McCool vs. Mickie James

The part where I should be just skipping past. However, I just want a release from the godawful "Piggie" storyline where I'm forced to take an extended toilet break, in order to spare the pain.

Predicted Winners: Mickie James
Mickie...James...Must...Win. Just so that this angle can just end. Hands up, who wanted to see pseudo high school mean girls plot over the "prestigious" Woman's Title?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Rundown
If there's two PPV you watch every year, one of them got to be this one. While the side distraction... I mean midcard matches are relatively short on star-power and quality, the Rumble itself, will be something to look out for.

Top 13 Most Anticipated Games Of 2010

Posted by Grey

Sidetracking The Yearly Zombie a little, we take a look at the thirteen of the most anticipated games of 2010.

Okay, 2009 has been a bleak year in gaming, from the lackluster sales to the heartbreaking closure and merging of several former gaming giants. We saw plenty of major releases announced and delayed despite the eventual strong performance overall.

Now as we stand here at the beginning of a brand new year (and a brand new decade, at that), let's take a look at thirteen of the mostly highly hyped and anticipated games amongst the promising lineups we have of 2010. And we can already tell from the stellar list, that this year is going to be a better year in gaming than the last.

As the list are based on perceived anticipation and are in alphabetical order, we would not be able to put a sensible rating onto them and in its place, we have imposed a "Brain Licking Potential Meter" instead.

Let's roll along.

BioShock 2

Developed by: 2K Marin, 2K Australia
Published by: 2K Games
Platforms available on: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
Released Date: February 9, 2010
Genre: Shooter, Survival Horror

With the sequel to the ground-breaking First Person Shooter, BioShock, the winner of Metacritic’s 2007 Game of the Year, prepared for another ride into the city where the artist would not fear the censor, where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality, and where the great would not be constrained by the small: Rapture, the underwater dystopian/anti-utopian city.

BioShock 2 takes players back to Rapture, 10 years after the first installment, as players take on the role of the former antagonistic Big Daddy (the first of its kind, complete with new weapons and powers), exploring the underwater city in a pressurized diving suit, allowing players to experience the city in an all new way. Little Sister, along with their new evil counterpart, Big Sister, will be joining the ride, promising another engrossing steam-punk First Person Shooter experience with an utopian/dystopian undertone.

Dead Rising 2

Developed by: Blue Castle, Capcom
Published by: Capcom
Platforms available on: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
Released Date: April, 2010
Genre: Survival Horror, Action Adventure, Sandbox, RPG

Why yes, it's the most anticipated Zombie-killing Survival Horror Action Adventure of 2010 (trust me, there's going be a lot of games falling under this genre in 2010, with iPhone churning one everyday) that will undoubtedly be one hell of a kill-fest.

The long delayed sequel to 2006’s Zombie Epic, Dead Rising, will embrace the over-the-top gore and violence of its predecessor closely as the original team return to work with Capcom. While the gameplay is likely to be in line with Dead Rising, a new protagonist has been introduced: Chuck Greene, a former national motocross champion, will be butchering hordes and hordes of zombies and psychopath alike in his quest to rescue his daughter in a new setting, the Vegas-like Fortune City.

According to media reports, the number of zombies onscreen at any one time has been dramatically increased from 800 in the original to a stellar 6,000. Player can definitely expect new, inventive, humorous and brutal way of mass murdering the undead, with human-sized hamster balls and chainsaw-equipped motorcycles being among the numerous methods announced. And for an extra bonus feature, an all new multiplayer mode with a maximum capacity of four players has been announced. The mode will reportedly take the form of a reality TV show called "Terror is Reality", in which players will act as contestants in a fictitious gameshow, utilizing their respective killing ways while competing against each other for the most kills inside an arena full of undead.

If everything else fails, you can rest assured this will definitely be an entry for "The Most Violent Game Of 2010".

Final Fantasy XIII

Developed by: Square Enix
Published by: Square Enix
Platforms available on: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
Released Date: March 9, 2010
Genre: RPG

For those unfamiliar with the series, Final Fantasy XIII, despite its title, is not a sequel but an entirely new game, and is in fact, the flagship title of the Fabula Nova Crystallis collection of Final Fantasy games, comprising Final Fantasy Agito XIII for PSP and Final Fantasy Versus XIII for PS3. Like the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII and the Ivalice Alliance, Fabula Nova Crystallis (which means "the New Tale of the Crystal" in Latin) take place in the same universe, but are not directly related to each other.

Without a shadow of a doubt, the most anticipated RPG of 2010, the thirteenth installment of the fan-favorite RPG series, Final Fantasy, which had its Japanese release late last year, has already sold in excess of one million units on its first day of sale in Japan. Given a near-perfect score 39/40 by the renowned Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, Final Fantasy XIII is shaping up to be a return to its tested-and-proven elements of cyber-punk esque futuristic setting, lush and intricate character designs, and one hell of a melodramatic yet engaging storyline. The turn-based menu-driven combat has also gotten a major face-lift, which have been much-touted as the best in the series. Not to mentioned the trademark gorgeous FMV that has consistently broke new ground with each installments.

For Xbox 360 gamers in Asia who are in anticipation of the game, do note that Microsoft's deal of an Xbox 360 iteration of the game only extend to Europe and America, which is a crying shame and is somewhat telling of how Microsoft look at its Asia market. Nevertheless, the English version of FFXIII will be released in March.

God of War III

Developed by: SCE Studios Santa Monica
Published by: Sony Computer Entertainment
Platform available on: PlayStation 3
Released Date: March 2010
Genre: Hack And Slash, Action Adventure

You know exactly how this will be kicking off: Zeus, with his ensemble fellow gods Poseidon, Hades, Hermes, Helios and Apollo by his side, will finally face off with Kratos, riding atop Gaia as the Titans scale Mount Olympus. It is the end, and it has begun.

"Zeus! Your son has returned! I bring the destruction of Olympus!"

The adrenaline-pumping, ass-kicking cliff-hanger ending has pushed for the ultimate climax in the series, keeping fans anticipation resoundingly high even after three long years. Awarded the Most Anticipated Game of 2010 award at the 2009 Spike Video Game Awards, God of War III is quite likely, a sure-fire entry for the Game Of The Year 2010.

The final entry in the best-selling, critically acclaimed God of War saga, God Of War III, the first installment on a next-gen platform, promises tremendous improvement with up to fifty enemies on screen at once and more bloody gore details realized. Player can also expect new combat gameplay like fighting on the backs of giant Titans, and new alternative weapons along with more eye-popping killer graphics.

SCE Studios Santa Monica has announced the God of War III Ultimate Trilogy Edition, a package which includes a high-end sculpted replica of Pandora's Box, a limited edition God of War art book, God of War Collection, God of War postcards and exclusive digital content available via the PlayStation Network. The exclusive digital content includes all four of the premium Kratos skins, the God of War Combat Arena, God of War: Unearthing the Legend Franchise Documentary, the God of War trilogy soundtrack, and the God of War: Blood and Metal EP, which is a heavy metal homage featuring original music from bands such as Killswitch Engage and Trivium, with songs inspired by God of War.

For all PS3 owner, this is the prized possession for many reasons, and for one particular priceless one: You can always shove this in the face of your snobbish friends who owns Xbox 360! March is indeed shaping up to be one hell of a huge month in gaming as we see the releases of two of the most anticipated games in years.

Halo: Reach

Developed by: Bungie
Published by: Microsoft Game Studios
Platforms available on: Xbox 360
Released Date: TBA 2010
Genre: First-Person Shooter

Long considered as the Microsoft Xbox's "killer app", Halo, the franchise created by Bungie and owned by Microsoft Game Studios, has come a long way since its inception on Xbox in 2001. With Microsoft officially taking over the development of the franchise, the upcoming Halo: Reach is quite possibly Bungie's last work on their creation. Ironically, this is the prequel to the main trilogy and thus will be without its signature character, the iconic Xbox mascot, Master Chief.

Taking place right before Halo: Combat Evolved, humanity's interstellar colonies have almost all but extinct with the planet Reach as one last stand under attack from the Covenant. Instead of Master Chief, player will be assuming the role of one of the latest member to the Noble Team, a UNSC special operations unit composed of elite supersoldiers known as Spartans.

Gameplay-wise, several additions will be implemented as co-op gameplay takes center-stage with the increase of co-op count to six players. A bona-fide contender to the title of First-Person Shooter Of The Year, rest assured that we can see the events of Halo: The Fall of Reach novel played out as the planet Reach goes out with a bang.

Hokuto Musō

Developed by: Omega Force
Published by: Koei
Platforms available on: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
Released Date: March, 2010
Genre: Action Adventure

A questionable and controversial decision, no doubt. This is one title you won't see anywhere else on other "most anticipated games of 2010" list. But here at The Daily Zombies, we dig the Three Kingdom Mythology big time, and we simply love Hack And Slash games so much. Who else but Koei and Omega Force can provide us with our regular dosage of mindless action? There's only one problem: Despite the insane body count you can easily accumulate in Koei's "Warriors" series, there's zero blood shown. The thought of that, is almost offensive by itself. It's almost like "Hell In A Cell" match with no blood. Oh wait, due to the recently implemented PG rating, WWE's "Hell In A Cell" match has been bloodless. I stand corrected.

Enter Fist of the North Star, and its annoucement of being the next spinoff series of the "Warriors" series, after the earlier collaboration between Gundam and Koei. Renowned worldwide for its ultra-violent sequences, with exploding heads and flying organs every few pages, the game will indeed be following closely to its source by featuring such stuffs.

Mindless violence has just evolved. Be prepared for the kind of ass-kicking, over-the-top action only Koei and Omega Force can provide, on this one. As with Dynasty Warriors 6, the game will be going multi-platform on both Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, and has been scheduled for release in March. Yes, I'm forecasting an economic crisis in March.

Heavy Rain

Developed by: Quantic Dream
Published by: Sony Computer Entertainment
Platforms available on: PlayStation 3
Released Date: 23 February 2010
Genre: Interactive Drama

Remember the stylish, disturbing paranormal thriller multi-platform game in 2007, Fahrenheit(AKA Indigo Prophecy) developed by Avant-garde game developer, Quantic Dream?

Directed by Quantic Dream's founder and CEO David Cage, who also wrote and directed the studio's two previous games, Omikron: The Nomad Soul and Fahrenheit, Quantic Dream presents yet another dark film-noir style crime thriller with mature themes, Heavy Rain. Blending Action Adventure, Interactive Drama, playable cut-scenes with a cinema-quality storyline, Heavy Rain has gotten many attention for simply being, different.

While the specific plot details are as yet unknown, we do know that it is going to be a hard-hitting story set firmly in reality as the four playable characters: an FBI profiler named Norman Jayden, a retired private detective named Scott Shelby, an architect named Ethan Mars, and a photo journalist named Madison Paige, set their respective course in pursue of a serial killer known as "The Origami Killer". Promising real-life character emotions, the title will be dealing in mature issues as the characters move on with their daily lives. An interesting twist, would be the fact that if your character die, the gameplay continues with you switching gameplay as one of the other characters, with the events of the previous character's death affecting the story. And in the event that all four characters die, there is yet another proper conclusion to the story. Reportedly, even the identity of "The Origami Killer" will be different, depending on the respective decision taken by the palyer's decision.

The idea of an Interactive Drama might not be as receptive to many gamers, but for PS3 owners keen on an unique gaming experience, this might just be the one to look out for.

The Last Guardian
Developed by: Team Ico
Published by: Sony Computer Entertainment
Platforms available on: PlayStation 3
Released Date: TBA 2010
Genre: Action Adventure, Puzzle

Fumito Ueda and Team Ico, renowned for making innovative games like Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, may just hold the ace in the hole in 2010.

Talks of their next project had already raised hype since it was first announced with no known date of release. Last May, the leaked trailer which was eventually revealed at E3, escalated the hype to an all new fever pitch, with its gorgeous graphics and moving scores.

Known in Japan as Hitokui no Ōwashi Trico (人喰いの大鷲トリコ, Hitokui no Ōwashi Toriko, and literally, "Trico, the Man-Eating Sea Eagle"), The Last Guardian thrusts players into a landscape not unlike those of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, with the protagonist being an unnamed boy, who befriends a gigantic, part-dog, part-griffin creature who plays an integral part in the boy's quest.

Fan anticipation has been wild, with many speculating on the game's connection to Team Ico's former works, and the unique presentation and gameplay that is promised in all Team Ico's works. Another PS3 exclusive that promises an exhilarating gaming experience.

The Legend Of Zelda

Developed by: Nintendo EAD
Published by: Nintendo
Platforms available on: Wii
Released Date: Late 2010
Genre: Action Adventure

The sixteenth installment in The Legend of Zelda series, has been confirmed for a 2010 release on January 6th, 2010. Without any gameplay videos or even trailer released, what's all this hype, and what's in the name?

Before any Nintendo fans snap into berzerker mode, this title is indeed hype-bound. For one, there's the much-speculated industry secret that this game has possibly been under development for five fucking years.

While an official title for the new game has not been announced yet, what we do know is the game has been confirmed to be utilizing Wii MotionPlus for its sword-fighting and archery sequence, both signature abilities of the main protagonist, Link. Other than that fact, all we have is a piece of concept art showcasing an adult Link, equipped with his standard shield, but no Master Sword in his other hand, a point which have created speculations from online communities if the mysterious figure standing behind Link is a personification of the sword.

Regardless, the sheer existence of a new Zelda game warrants a place on any "Most Anticipated Games" list. Watch out for this one.

Mass Effect 2

Developed by: BioWare
Published by: Electronic Arts
Platforms available on: Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360
Released Date: January 26, 2010
Genre: Action RPG

Released in North America on January 26th, this title is easily the first to be released on this list and quite possibly, one of the year's first Game Of The Year contender.

Bioware must be currently in a hyper mode, considering the fact that Dragon Age: Origins was just released in November, 2009. With Mass Effect 2, the second installment in a planned Sci-fi action RPG trilogy, player gets another one-way ticket as the protagonist, Commander Shepard, in a intergalactic fight-to-the-finish with a mysterious aliens forces in the 22nd century.

With the reputation built from the first Mass Effect for its compelling gameplay and engaging storyline, this is the only RPG game that can face off the killing competition from FFXIII. Expect optimized graphics and improved gameplay in this follow-up to the award-winning original.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

Developed by: Kojima Productions
Published by: Konami
Platforms available on: PlayStation Portable
Released Date: May 25, 2010
Genre: Stealth Action, Action Adventure

Undoubtedly the single most anticipated game in the year 2010 on the PSP, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is a full-fledged direct sequel to Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops.

While the fact that Hideo Kojima actually decided to have his latest magnum opus exclusively on a handheld game has been puzzling for some, that does not mean that all this sequel does is treading its old path. Featuring a heavy emphasis on co-operative gameplay, with two players in main missions and up to four players in boss missions, players can choose one of four different Snakes with different layouts. Other intriguing co-operative actions include holding up closing doors, performing CPR on fallen comrades, sharing items, and acting as a spotter for other players whose vision is obscured. The CQC system gets a heavy update while the good old cardboard trick used to hide from enemy soldiers also evolved as players get different variations of it, with different effects and usages.

Focusing on the final chapter of the origin of Big Boss (AKA Naked Snake), the latest installment will detail the transformation of Militaires Sans Frontières (Soldiers without Borders) mercenary group to the infamous mercenary nation, Outer Heaven.

With a gripping storyline filled with daft characterization, long-time fans of the franchise can look forward to one hell of a chapter in the rip-roaring classic series.
