Final Fantasy XIII-2 Announced

Fancy giving a second chance to probably the most disappointing game of 2010?

Years of anticipation has somehow ensured Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIII's eventual status as quite likely the most disappointing game of 2010. And you just can't blame the long-time fans for their expectedly high hopes raised for a brand as strong as the evergreen series. So now, the question is, would you give the game a second shot at your heart?

During the Square Enix 1st Production Department Premier event held in Tokyo on yesterday (January 18th), game director Motomu Toriyama officially announced the sequel, unveiling the trailer in the process.

Without further ado, hit the jump to check out the trailer before it is taken down. Kudos to YouTube user nyaon60 for the video, which should only be unveiled to the public on January 20th on the freshly-opened new official site of the sequel, as announced by Square Enix (An obvious spoiler alert for those who have not completed Final Fantasy XIII).

Update: The video has been taken down by Square Enix.

2nd Update: A new video has been uploaded by PlayStationBlogEU, and in English.

3rd Update: That was also taken down, but never mind. Square Enix has finally uploaded the HD trailer.

Despite the decidedly mixed response to Final Fantasy XIII, the game was one of the most lucrative last year, a point that has no doubt factored in the decision to release the sequel. With the increasingly confusing and expanding scheduled titles for the Fabula Nova Crystallis collection of Final Fantasy games, we have waited for titles included in the collection for years (Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been unveiled at E3 2006), how long do we have to wait for this one? Surprisingly, not long at all. If everything goes on track for Square Enix, we might just be seeing the release of Final Fantasy XIII-2 on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this year (making the release date of the English version of the sequel likely to be sometime early next year).

While the concept of a sequel to a particular Final Fantasy title isn't exactly new (with the release of Final Fantasy X-2 in 2001), Final Fantasy XIII-3 might just be Square Enix's chance to redeem themselves.

Check out the official logo for a new protagonist/antagonist that has also appeared in the trailer.

So now somebody can go tell Tetsuya Nomura that Lightning won't be forgotten in the very near future. Not with the scheduled upcoming upcoming release of Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy and this one.
