Selina Kyle & Bane Confirmed & Cast In The Dark Knight Rises

Posted by Grey Thursday, January 20, 2011

Following the unveiling of X-Men: First Class, here we have yet another major comic-to-screen scoop from Christopher Nolan's swan song to the Batman mythos, The Dark Knight Rises.

It is official. Here's a couple of confirmed casting news from the much-anticipated final magnum opus in the Batman trilogy crafted by auteur director Christopher Nolan.

Selina Kyle, better-known as the notorious (in both comics and films, oh wait, mostly films, thanks to Halle Berry's 2004 outing) Catwoman, will be played by Anne Hathaway ( Love and Other Drugs). However, notice carefully how the press release from Warner Bros. failed to mention Selina Kyle's more famous alter-ego.

While it has been much-rumored in the press that there will be two female lead in the film with one being the villain while the other one serving as a love interest, it certainly seems that Selina Kyle fits the bill on both accounts. So will Talia al Ghul, the estranged daughter of Ra's al Ghul (Liam Neeson in Batman Begins), be appearing in the sequel?

On the other hand, to the surprise of many speculators, actor Tom Hardy (Inception) will not be playing the role of Hugo Strange, the supervillain psychologist.

A most interesting development, given the somewhat monotonous character of Bane, whose only drift is for breaking Batman's back during the 90s. Incidentally, contrary to popular beliefs, this is not the first time Bane has his on-screen presence felt. In the 1997 Joel Schumacher's disastrous take on the Batman mythos (which in a way nearly killed the franchise out cold), Bane was portrayed by Jeep Swenson with zero dialogue.

Courtesy to Collider, here's the official press release:

BURBANK, CA, January 19, 2011 – Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” She will be starring alongside Christian Bale, who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Christopher Nolan stated, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.”

In addition, Tom Hardy has been set to play Bane. Nolan said, “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.”

Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven.

“The Dark Knight Rises” is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
