Insidious: Undead Monday

Posted by Grey

This time, it's not the house that is haunted. It's the kid. With the look of Justin Bieber, I'm not too surprised about that.

What happens when you put the creative forces behind two of the most popular modern horror film franchises together? Insidious would be the answer.

Directed by James Wan, the writer and director of the first Saw and co-produced by Oren Peli, the writer and director of Paranormal Activity, Insidious features acclaimed actors Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne in a seemingly typical "Poltergeist" scenario until the aforementioned twist.

An all-too-brief plot synopsis, courtesy of ComingSoon.net:

Insidious is about a young family that makes the terrifying discovery that the body of their comatose boy has become a magnet for malevolent entities, while his consciousness lies trapped in the dark and insidious realm known as "The Further."

Here's the first poster of the film, featuring a Justin Bieber-lookalike kid.

And here's the trailers released thus far.

The Secret & Totally Ludicrous DC Universe Action Figures Designs In The 1980s

Posted by Grey

In an alternate universe, we would have seen these incredibly ludicrous actions figures for the DC Universe to be released in the 1980s instead of the classic Super Powers Collection from Kenner. Well, this is not that Universe.

Having pleasant memory of Kenner's Super Powers Collection, the line of action figures based on the superheroes and supervillains from DC Comics that was released in the 1980s?

Bid farewell to that pleasant memory if you decide to read on.

Apparently, some time back in the 1980s, Kenner, in an effort to follow up on the well-received Super Powers Collection, decided to tap on some zeitgeist element of the time: The anti-hero, post-apocalyptic "Road Warrior" style of Mad Max. In this line of Kenner Anti-Heroes version of the beloved superheroes of DC Comics, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and more, are transformed into leather-wearing, metal-strapped punks.

These bold designs were eventually scrapped for probable sanity-related issues, and have remained unseen. Until now. A series of these unused, top-secret concept designs have been unveiled and the original art pieces of them made available for auction right here.

Here's the description from the auction page:

This lot of six style guides were likely produced as a proposal for a line of Kenner action figures of "DC Ant-Heroes". Each style guide features images of a major DC hero in three distinct thematic looks -- "Hi-Tech", "Road Warrior" and "Robotic". Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Robin, Firestorm, and Cyborg are included (though one has to wonder the sense in a "Robotic" style Cyborg!). Each guide also features an overlay with notes and color codes. The color codes in particular would suggest that these are not "fan art", but rather an actual proposal that was developed for or by Kenner. DC engaged in a large amount of merchandising and licensing in the 1980s, including one with Kenner for the Super Powers line.

The artist on these pieces is unknown, but the Batman piece is dated 1985. It is unknown if these toys went any further in the production process than these guides, but they give us an interesting looking into the creative process with some distinctive images of some very famous DC heroes. Each of these pages has an image area of approximately 10" x 15". This art comes directly from the estate of artist and editor Joe Orlando and it has never been offered for sale before.

Check out the article from Comics Alliance for more in-depth, ahem, analysis on the work. For now, indulge yourself in these maddening kinkiness by checking them out in hi-res.

Unfortunately, for those with a mad-on for more kinky fetish with Batman and his Boy Wonder, the auction has ended.

WWE Signs Mistico

Posted by Grey

Prepare for an all-new wave of Luchador enmascarado (masked wrestler) invasion as Mistico signs with WWE.

Unquestionably the biggest box office draw in all of Mexico and the main tecnico (face, or good guy for those unfamiliar with professional wrestling jargons) in Mexico's Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) promotion, Mistico, has signed with WWE at a major press conference held by WWE in his hometown, Mexico City.

Renowned for his high-flying antics and in-ring abilities worldwide, Mistico has won numerous accolades in his young yet storied career, capturing multiple world titles and was voted "Wrestler of the Year", "Biggest Box Office Draw", and "Best Flying Wrestler" by Wrestling Observer in their 2006 "Year-End Awards". He was also ranked third in Pro Wrestling Illustrated's list of the top 500 wrestlers of 2007. While the namesake, "Mistico", is Spanish for "Mystic", the much-lauded aerialist was known to be a religious character who is the storyline protégé of the world-famous wrestling priest Fray Tormenta, the inspiration behind Jack Black's 2006 comedy, Nacho Libre, and characters like the jaguar-masked King from Namco's Tekken series.

Now signed to WWE under the name Sin Cara, Mistico explained his new namesake at the press conference:

“WWE is the pinnacle of sports-entertainment. It is an honor and a thrill for me to be able to perform with the world’s best. Being a WWE Superstar will present new challenges, new mountains to climb and new competition. It is a new beginning and a new life. With that in mind, I have chosen the new name of Sin Cara in hopes to represent all the legendary Mexican masked performers and to carry the banner of their legacy to the entire world.”

Stephanie McMahon, the Executive Vice President of WWE said, "Sin Cara is a tremendous performer who brings the crowd to its feet every time he steps into the ring. With us, his stardom will only get bigger and brighter."

For the skeptics among you, you might just be thinking how big will Sin Cara's stardom get? Incidentally, we still remember Último Dragón's WWE run. Will Sin Cara's push be similar to the current monster push behind latest Royal Rumble winner, Alberto Del Rio? Will we get to see Sin Cara facing Rey Mysterio, now near the end of his incredible career, in a "Mask vs. Career" match at WrestleMania XXVIII next year, slated to be taking place in Miami, Florida, where a sizable crowd of Mexican awaits? Don't hold your breath on that. For those who are not familiar with Mistico, here's a video clip off your friendly neighborhood YouTube showcasing the top ten moves of Mistico.

Here's a picture lifted from the net, supposedly depicting Mistico unmasked.
