8.9-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Japan

Posted by Grey Saturday, March 12, 2011

Japan, the world's most earthquake-prepared nation, faces off against the most formidable earthquake it has ever faced in recorded history.

The worst earthquake to hit mankind in recent history has struck hard at the folks in Tokyo.

Originally measured at 7.9-magnitude off the Oshika Peninsula, the east coast of Tōhoku, Japan, earlier yesterday on 11th March, at 05:46 UTC (14:46 local time), the earthquake was later updated to 8.9, creating tsunami waves of up to 10 metres (33 ft).

Till now, media reports by Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) indicated that at least 288 people have died, while a total of 398 are reportedly missing in six different prefectures in Japan. The death toll are expected to be far higher.

Sitting on the "Pacific Ring of Fire" covered with volcanoes, whereby the continental plates moves rapidly in tectonic terms, Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone country in the world. While the government's Earthquake Research Committee has warned of a 70 per cent chance that a great, magnitude-eight quake will strike within the next 30 years in the Kanto plains, home to Tokyo's vast urban sprawl, it is as yet unknown if this is the earthquake that was earlier predicted.
