Attack The Block Preview: First Trailer

Posted by Grey Monday, March 7, 2011

We have pitted Cowboys, marines, and other unlikely stereotypes against alien invaders. And now, London's worst teen thugs are taking on the role of the Earth's defenders.

While there is no doubt that we are expecting a staggering number of alien-themed film this year, Joe Cornish's "Attack the Block" is one addition to the genre that we wouldn't mind at all.

For those who thought Cornish's name rang a bell, the multi-talented comedian was the co-writer for the film adaptation of Marvel Studio's Ant-Man film along with long-time partner-in-crime, Edgar Wright, the director that brought you Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Both of them also took on the task of rewriting Steven Moffat's script for The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn, Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson's motion capture 3-D film adaptation based on The Adventures of Tintin.

Featuring a refreshing take on the alien invasion genre, Attack the Block pits the heartless teen street gangs defending their turf in London against the probably equally heartless alien invaders.

Here's the official plot synopsis:

Sam is walking home in a scary South London tower block when she’s robbed by a gang of hooded youths. She flees when the gang are attacked by a small alien creature which falls from the sky.

While Sam and the police hunt for the gang, a second wave of creatures falls. The gang grab weapons, mount bikes, and set out to defend their turf. But this time, the creatures are much bigger. Savage and bestial, nothing will stand in their way. And the bunch of no-hope kids who just attacked Sam are about to become her only hope.

With the official release of the international trailer by Empire Online, the feel of the film was suitably kinetic, doing away much of the cheesiness you can usually find in Hollywood's offerings featuring an ensemble of teenage casts. Much like Shaun of the Dead (also featuring actor Nick Frost, and co-produced by Nira Park and James Wilson), the trailer was laden with tongue-in-cheek humor at the genre convention.

Withput further ado, hit the jump to check out the trailer.

Attack the Block is expected to premiere at the "South by Southwest" (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas, later this month, with a scheduled opening date in UK on May 13th.
