This Undead Monday, we bring you a preview of the remake of one of the most well-regarded Hong Kong film ever, A Chinese Ghost Story 《倩女幽魂》.

Directed by Ching Siu-tung, and produced by notable Hong Kong filmmaker Tsui Hark in 1987, A Chinese Ghost Story 《倩女幽魂》was immensely popular upon release, launching the stardom of Joey Wong, while further cementing the late, great Leslie Cheung his iconic status in Hong Kong cinematic history. An inevitable side effect from the tremendous success of the film would be the endless hordes of films featuring similar theme of folklore ghost story, while the original film spawned several sequels, an animated movie, and a TV series adaptation.

And here we are, twenty-five years removed, with a remake of the classic film scheduled to release in Hong Kong come April.

Directed by Wilson Yip (葉偉信, who previously brought us great action flicks like Donnie Yen's SPL: Sha Po Lang《殺破狼》, Flash Point《導火綫》, and of course, the Ip Man films《葉問》, as well as abominations like the dreaded comic adaptation, Dragon Tiger Gate《龍虎門》), the remake stars Liu Yifei, Yu Shaoqun, and Louis Koo as the the three main characters, Nie Xiaoqian 聶小倩, Ning Caichen 寧采臣, and Yan Chixia 燕赤霞, respectively.

Here's the trailer of the film.

Despite the fact that the original film was made a quarter century ago, we are still not sold on the idea of a competent remake of the classic film. While the special effects and general production values would almost certainly surpass the original, there is an unique kinetic ambiance with the original that even Tsui Hark himself just can't emulate. However, the casting of Louis Koo as the elder Taoist Yan Chixia seemed to imply an additional role of the original character, further confirmed by the trailer and one of the stills below.

Hit the jump to check out the stills from the film.

While we aren't exactly sure what would be the actual English title of the film, it seems like neither does the film studio, with the poster naming it "A Chinese Fairy Tale" while the trailer calling it "A Chinese Ghost Story". The film is currently scheduled with a theatrical release date on April 22nd.
