Five Men/Dogs To The Rescue In Quake-Hit Japan

Posted by Grey Sunday, March 13, 2011

We all knew how generous the Singapore Government was, with their whooping donation to the victims of the Haiti Earthquake last year. Interested in knowing the total number of rescuers they have sent to quake-hit Japan?

Long-time readers who have saw our coverage on the 8.9-magnitude earthquake that have struck Japan on Friday will know that we have dropped our usual sardonic, deadpan self, when addressing the catastrophic tragedy. But we can't help but balk at the stunning number in the rescue team that the Singapore Government have hastily sent off to aid the rescue operations.

An excerpt from the unbelievably opportunistic Channel NewsAsia (More on the opportunistic part in a later post. Trust us, we don't exaggerate):

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) has sent five search specialists and five search dogs to Japan to assist in the rescue operations following the 8.9-magnitude earthquake which hit northeast Japan on Friday.

The SCDF officers are from the Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) contingent, codenamed Operation Lionheart.

While our comments are by no means in detriment to the heroic specialists, of which four out of five have just returned from Christchurch, New Zealand on March 6th after participating in the search and rescue efforts there, the incredulously miserable figure of rescuers in the aid effort is simply put laughably stunning.

By comparison, Singapore's long-time buddy/nemesis, the Malaysian government has sent a search and rescue team comprising 15 doctors and medical assistants as well as six tracker dogs. And we have not even touch on aids from the other first-world nations.
