Melancholia Preview: First Trailer

Lars von Trier does apocalyptic disaster film.

As unthinkable as that sound, yes, the latest film by Lars von Trier, the controversial yet considerably critically acclaimed director that brought you 2009's "Antichrist" and 2000's "Dancer in the Dark", has a seemingly perfectly marketable theme.

In Melancholia, a drama set against an impending apocalypse, you can be quite certain that you are in for a disaster movie like no other. Featuring a strong ensemble cast, the film stars Kirsten Dunst as Justine, who is getting married to Michael (Alexander Skarsgård) at the house of his sister Claire(Charlotte Gainsbourg) and her husband (Kiefer Sutherland). After some necessary melodrama, it was eventually revealed that a planet previously hidden behind the sun has emerged and is set for a collision course with Earth, promising the end of the world we know. Arthouse stuffs? With Von Trier, you can be certain on that, especially with his comment that he considers all of his previous films to end happily, and that this will be the first with an unhappy ending.

Nevertheless, hit the jump to check out the beautiful trailer.
