Ape-ocalypse now! Watch the uprising of the primates in the first trailer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Mankind's unexplained fixation on all things ape continues with the upcoming prequel to the Planet of the Apes film series that begun all the way back in 1968 with Charlton Heston's original film that have since been selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Previous known simply as Rise of the Apes, Rise of the Planet of the Apes will be the seventh entry in the surprisingly evergreen film franchise that spawned four sequels, a TV series, an animation series, and an underwhelming remake directed by Tim Burton in 2001. Directed by British writer/director Rupert Wyatt and based on a screenplay by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, the prequel chronicles the beginning of the uprising of the primates that created the dystopia world in the original film. Starring James Franco as a scientist working on a cure for Alzheimer's by testing on apes (and probably the one who doomed us all to the apes), the film also stars Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, Tom Felton, and Brian Cox, with Andy Serkis playing the role of Caesar, the ape that led the eventual successful revolution, by providing both the voice and movements for the full CGI character.

Here's the official plot synopsis:

A single act of both compassion and arrogance leads to a war unlike any other — and to the RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. The Oscar-winning visual effects team that brought to life the worlds of Avatar and Lord of the Rings is breaking new ground, creating a CGI ape that delivers a dramatic performance of unprecedented emotion and intelligence, and epic battles on which rest the upended destinies of man and primate.

And without further ado, brace yourself for some really creepy ape-on-man action with the first official trailer of the film.

How creepy? This creepy.

Head over to Apple to check out the trailer in full HD. And for those interested in all the gritty details in the trailer, head over to iO9 for their in-depth analysis breaking down the footage with numerous screen captures. And of course, there's that ridiculous money shot of an ape jumping down on the helicopter.

In the meantime, check out these concept art pieces released by 20th Century Fox and the special effects gurus at Weta Digital, depicting one of the creepiest apocalyptic scenarios we have seen around. Apes! Apes! Apes!

The first poster of the film is subtly efficient.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes will be in theaters August 5th.
