Awake: First Look

We kicked off our coverage on the upcoming new TV series set to debut next season with NBC's Awake, an emotional-heavy genre-bending cop drama with a tinge of sci-fi twist, starring Lucius Malfoy!

NBC has fired the first shot in the forthcoming TV ratings war, as it announces its slate of upcoming new dramas and comedies set to fill up their TV schedule for 2011-2012.

As we bid farewell to the confirmed news of NBC passing on David E. Kelley's Wonder Woman with mixed feelings (have we avoided an inevitable train-wreck, that we probably wanted to watch anyway?), it is ecstatic to witness interesting new series that dared to challenge modern TV audiences. From Amber Heard in a Playboy Bunny suit in The Playboy Club, the magical police procedural in Grimm, to Awake's intriguing genre-bending plot, we see hope in TV, one year removed from The Event (THE EVƎNT). Add that to Fox's time-travelers-meet-dinosaur adventure produced by Stephen Spielberg himself, as well as J. J. Abrams' next TV magnum opus (more on those later). Back to the topic on hand, let's take a first look at Awake.

Formerly known as REM, Awake is created by Kyle Killen (the mind behind the critically acclaimed yet short-lived Lone Star from last season) and stars Jason Issacs (better known for his role as Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter film series) as a Detective Michael Britten whose life took a surreal turn following a cataclysmic car crash that fractured his family forever literally: Britten now finds himself living in two similar yet different realities. While his son has died from the car crash while Britten and his wife survived in one, it is his wife who died while his son survived in the other.

While this sounded extremely convoluted and somewhat outrageous, the trailer released has made a convincing pitch to us that the series has the potential to be one of the most compelling dramas with a truly original concept. With no further ado, hit the jump to check out the trailer, followed by the full synopsis of the series.

Here's the official synopsis of the series:

‘AWAKE' — "Awake" is an intriguing drama about a detective (Jason Issacs, "Harry Potter," "Brotherhood") who finds he is leading an arduous double life that defies reality. When Detective Michael Britten (Issacs) regains consciousness following his family's car accident, he is told that his wife Hannah (Laura Allen, "Terriers") perished but that his teen son, Rex (Dylan Minnette, "Saving Grace"), has survived. As he tries to put the pieces of his life back together, he awakens again in a parallel reality in which his wife is very much alive — but his son Rex died in the accident. In order to keep both of his loved ones alive at one time, he begins living two dueling realities in parallel worlds, which churns up confusion — in one moment, Michael and his wife debate about having another child to replace their son, while in the other reality, he is attracted to his son's tennis coach, Tara (Michaela McManus, "The Vampire Diaries"), to fill the void from the loss of his wife. Trying to regain some normalcy, Michael returns to police work and solves crimes in both worlds with the help of two different partners — Detective Isaiah "Bird" Freeman (Steve Harris, "The Practice") and Detective Efrem Vega (Wilmer Valderrama, "That '70s Show"). Also starring are Emmy Award winner Cherry Jones ("24") and BD Wong (NBC's "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit") as therapists in each respective world. The series is produced by 20th Century Fox Television. Kyle Killen ("Lone Star") and Howard Gordon ("24") are executive producers. David Slade ("Twilight: Eclipse," "30 Days of Night") also serves as executive producer and directed the pilot written by Killen.
