Feast your eyes on the first promotional art for the upcoming film adaptation of Buichi Terasawa (寺沢 武一)'s classic space opera manga series, Space Adventure Cobra.

Originally serialized in the Weekly Shōnen Jump during 1978–1984, Cobra, or rather Space Pirate Cobra, has enjoyed an iconic status as one of a selected few of the first waves of manga/anime to achieved tremendous success in the western world. And now, with the upcoming film adaptation, the pop icon status of the well-received series is further cemented.

Moving on from the calm deadly waters of Piranha 3D, French film director Alexandre Aja will be taking on his childhood hero in the live-action film. In the latest issue of the international edition of Variety, an exclusive promotional promo art for the film adaptation, now apparently known as Cobra the Space Pirate, was unveiled. Hit the jump to check out the image.

And here's a cover from the original manga, just so you dig the James Bond-inspired intrigue in the mix of the Philip K.Dick-esque space opera.
