WWE Extreme Rules Preview

Posted by Grey Sunday, May 1, 2011

The first Pay-Per-View (PPV) since the WrestleMania extravaganza last month will be hitting the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Florida tonight. Will Cena finally get his hand on the WWE Championship? Who will be crowned a first-time World Heavyweight Champion? The Daily Zombies are here with our views.

With WrestleMania XXVII behind us, tonight WWE presents Extreme Rules, where every matches featured in the show comes with a special stipulation inclining to what we used to called "hardcore". As we officially enter the post-mania lull period, the Extreme Rules PPV has since its inception (and rescheduling last year) became a show with rematches from WrestleMania, tuned to the extreme with the special stipulations. That said, in the PG-TV era where no blood can ever be shed (apart from the incidental), how extreme can the PPV get? The answer, I afraid, is something Vince McMahon would really be dying to have, especially in this uncomfortable time for WWE with the announcement at WWE's annual shareholders meeting. Nevertheless, it's not all bad news for WWE, with the tremendous buy-rate for WrestleMania, thanks to run-ins by Attitude era Icons like Stone Cold and more importantly, The Rock.

Back to the topic, we are cutting right to the chase for this edition of preview as May 1st happened to be an important day for yours truly, so be prepared for a somewhat bare-boned version of our regular preview for this one. However, before we moved on, it is extremely important to mention that Edge, the beloved Rated-R Superstar has retired due to being diagnosed with cervical spinal stenosis stemming from previously sustained injuries. We thanked Adam Joseph Copeland (Edge's real-life alter ego) for his amazing contribution to professional wrestling and wished the very best in his future endeavors (hopefully concerning the business he spent his life to). We would be issuing a separate "Thank You" note to Edge, but there's another major issue coming out from the "Showcase of the Immortal": The Rock will be taking on John Cena in next year's WrestleMania XXVIII at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, making it a historical first time that a match was made nearly a year in advance for the show.

Anyway, we totally flunked with our prediction for WrestleMania XXVII last month, scoring only a couple of hit, making it our worst-ever prediction yet. Guessed we are just bad with the major shows, much like last year's WrestleMania XXVI. Let's see how we rebound from that one. On with the show.

WWE Championship Triple Threat Steel Cage Match

So now that The Rock is finally out of the picture, you must be thinking that we have seen the last of the "bizarre Love Triangle" angle surrounding the WWE Championship, and no one is going to interrupt Cena and The Miz's little mano-a-mano encounter?

Tough luck.

With The Great One gone, we now have John Morrison in the fray for a Triple Threat Steel Cage Match. Being The Miz's former partner (remember the "Jannety" name-calling angle both of them had during their break-up angle), Morrison has largely played second fiddle in main event matches, and that's only on his most lucky days.

The match should be fine, with Morrison's natural athletic abilities, The Miz's heel charisma, and... Cena being Cena.

Predicted Winner: The Miz
Just where do you think we are going with the continuation of the "bizarre Love Triangle" angle with a new participant? Just so that Cena can be protected for not winning The Miz due to Morrison taking the fall, probably due to the interference of R-Truth, who recently turned heel.

Christian vs. Alberto Del Rio (World Heavyweight Championship Ladder Match)

Now, this right here is a match I'll PAY to watch. Guaranteeing a new first-time World Heavyweight Champion, this is a match long in the making for all fans of Christian.

With Edge vacating his world title, Christian subsequently won an over-the-top-rope battle royale to win a chance to face Alberto Del Rio, the number one contender.

Now that we know why Christian played the second fiddle for Edge last month and the match having no swerve at all, will we finally see Christian, climbing up that ladder to win the belt he oh-so-deserving to have? The anticipation itself is already an indication of the great booking with this one. While Christian will definitely be in his element in this Ladder Match and Del Rio being more of a mat-based guy, this match should be something to look out for its intensity.

Predicted Winner: Christian
I'm willing to take a bet for this one. While some might argue that the fact that Del Rio has been drafted to Raw is an indicator that Christian is going to win this one, I however, isn't that hopeful for this theory. But I do think it is now or never for the Captain Charisma.

Randy Orton vs. CM Punk (Last Man Standing Match)

With the war between Orton and Punk heading into a definite final chapter with this one, expect an even more intense match between the two great performers who gave us one hell of a great match last month.

Predicted Winners: Randy Orton
I stuck to my guns last month for Punk to go over Orton, and for the second WrestleMania in a roll, I'm wrong. So there's no way I'm going wrond with this one: The face takes the victory at the end of the feud.

Jerry Lawler & Jim Ross vs. Michael Cole & Jack Swagger (Country Whipping Match)

How wrong I was when I thought that the moment for a major ass-whooping for Michael Cole was finally upon us last month. And now I'm just indifferent about this, just like how Cole himself indifferently talked himself our of every seemingly bad situation.

Add to the fact that good ol' JR is in the match-up, I just hoped this get as short as possible.

Predicted Winner: Jerry "The King" Lawler
Well, I was the one who mentioned in our preview for WrestleMania XXVII, "If Michael Cole wins, the entire WWE Universe might just go super-nova and have an anti-big bang, then proceed to an instant heat death.
But I'm still taking Lawler to win this one to even out the feud a little. Hell I just hoped they can just kill the feud altogether. Or better still, get Cole off my TV, for crying out loud.

Rey Mysterio vs. Cody Rhodes (Falls Count Anywhere Match)

Yet another straight rematch taken to the extreme and struck with one participant who has moved on to another show.

The WrestleMania XXVII match was fine, and the recent rematch at last week's Smackdown was pretty good too. You can expect a good old traditional match with this one.

Predicted Winners: Rey Mysterio
Mysterio lost last month's match, and despite winning at the rematch at Smackdown, he still got the shorter end of the stick, getting a beatdown by Rhodes following that. In accordance to the momentum rules (for Wrestling), this is the time for Mysterio to take one back.

Layla vs. Michelle McCool (Loser Leaves WWE Match)

The obligatory Divas match turned out to be the final chapter in the reign of heel group Lay-Cool. While we have actually waited for this day a long time in the making, the anti-climatic way it was done just make us wished it can be over quickly. The divas scene can wait till the coming of Awesome Kong (Kharma) for now.

Predicted Winners: Layla
Layla is undoubtedly the face here, and with online rumors about McCool's reported intetion to leave WWE, it is more likely than not to expect a face win here.

The Rundown

I have said this before, and I'm saying it again: The PPV should actually be called "Extremely PG Rules" instead. As long as you don't go set your target too high for some "extreme hardcore action", this PPV can be more than serviceable.
