WWE Over the Limit Preview

Posted by Grey Sunday, May 22, 2011

With eight matches announced, the second annual Over the Limit takes place tonight, live at the KeyArena in Seattle, Washington. Prepare yourself for the Pay-Per-View (PPV) with our preview right here.

One of the worst titled WE PPV ever returns for its second annual installment. The PPV title that made absolutely no sense whatsoever is back, amid the overwhelming coverage surrounding the tragic demise of all time WWF legend, "Macho Man" Randy Savage. While there is no doubt that whatever happens in this PPV, all related news and development will only be dwarfed by the ongoing coverage of Savage's untimely passing, we are pretty sure ourselves that there just isn't going to be much to talk about anyway.

The steady decline of the state of WWE TV programming post-WrestleMania continues...

Daniel Bryan on the promotional poster of a WWE PPV...at the receiving end of a not-too-formidable move from The Miz, who is himself front and center on the poster. SO just exactly how not-too-formidable is that move? Well, the fact that it was heavily photoshopped and stylized to add more intensity is perhaps telling, as with the entire quality of the poster, of how serious WWE is treating the show. Going so fast that Daniel Bryan's head got blurred. Really? The Miz? Really?

Aesthetic complaints aside, the simple fact that the only match that interest me in the PPV is Christian vs. Randy Orton, a rematch from an actual World Heavyweight Championship match at Smackdown that was gave away with no push whatsoever, is perhaps a clear indication of how enticed I am at the prospect of this PPV. While Christian's two-day title reign (the Smackdown taping was in fact did on the following Tuesday) has pissed off many fans and almost every online critic of the business, I tend to look at the silver lining, thereby quite certain of an interesting storyline for Christian as a fall-out of their second encounter.

As for The Miz challenging Cena in an "I Quit" match for the WWE Championship, we just can't seem to be remotely convinced that there lies a possibility that Cena will say "I Quit", given his regular superhuman antics.

Meanwhile the entire WWE Universe is crawling in its pace, with Raw being the main offender churning out match-ups and scenarios we have seen repeatedly to the point of offensive.

A bunch of usual suspects opening the show claiming to be the number-one contender with the the whole talkshow lead to a number-one contender match involving multiple participants? Check.

Rey Mysterio vs. Alberto Del Rio? Check.

John Cena ST the FU out of Alex Riley? Check.

Big, Powerbomb kinda guy outshining his stable mates by taking out Big Show and Kane? Check, this is exactly the same storyline we had in a week for both Raw and Smackdown.

Granted that it is May now, and that this is usually the period of time where storyline just kind of suck. The TV programming for Raw had better improved before any remaining interest in the product dies out fast. On the other hand, Smackdown is doing fine with interesting match-ups like Sin Cara vs. Daniel Bryan, and Christian vs. Sheamus. The retirement of Edge and injury that sidelined John Morrison will no doubt factored in to the already-shallow roster. And we can't wait for some breakthrough in the program instead of more actions involving Mark Henry, Great Khali, or Alex Riley.

Anyway, we improved tremendously for our prediction for Extreme Rules, as compared to the totally fucked-up prediction for WrestleMania XXVII last month. A four-out-of-six score might just get further improved with this one.

On with the show.

WWE Champion John Cena vs. The Miz (“I Quit” Match) Match

With The Rock out of the picture and Cena back as "The Champ", has business picked up here at the Raw title picture? Well, it has in a way but it could have been better. With weird booking and pacing of the progress of the feud (thanks to The Rock's Birthday celebration), the feud isn't having much heat left on its tank now. Match quality-wise, Cena hasn't clicked with The Miz in their numerous outings and I suspect this would be pretty much the same fare, despite the heightened stipulation.

Predicted Winner: John Cena
Has John Cena ever lost an "I Quit" match? The answer is a resounding no. Cena has had three "I Quit" in his storied career, and he has never said the magic word ever. Instead, JBL, Randy Orton, and Batista took the fall. What makes you think The Miz will be different? Cena has been almost superhuman in his characterization to the point that he is unlikely to legitimately submit in such a manner. Unless there is something along the line of the finish of The Rock and Mick Foley's classic "I Quit" match. Which I still don't happening.

World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton vs. Christian
Yes, for the record, we here at The Daily Zombies, are upset at the ridiculously short title reign of Captain Charisma. But as we have mentioned earlier, we tend to see the silver lining in pro-wrestling booking, and suspect WWE having an ace-in-the-hole with this one.

The first match-up has been a thriller to watch. Expect this one to further intensified from there.

Predicted Winner: Randy Orton
So what's all this silver lining about? We are seriously predicting a massive heel turn by Christian that will solidify his position in the title picture by positioning himself as the number-one heel at Smackdown. Everything add up. Smackdown is almost devoid of a decent heel (with the exception of Sheamus, of which they had given the match away, perhaps with reasons), Christian is great as a heel, and the fact that a long-term program between Orton and Christian has the potential to work out well.

And all that takes is for Christian to finally lose it after failing in his rematch clause.

Jerry Lawler vs. Michael Cole (Kiss My Foot Match)

This feud has gone from a red hot feud to an unprecedented level rarely seen in professional wrestling history: Nothing the face does now can relieved the audiences hours and hours of pain and depression Cole has inflicted on us. We just wanted to quietly move on... and stop the pain. We have went from interested, to indifferent, to quietly just get on with our lives.

As for the match quality, there are almost none, with Lawler's efficient in-ring storytelling ability being the sole support here. The only good coming out from here would be that Swagger's career might just be catapulted somehow if Cole's heat were to be directed towards him, leading to a face turn. Which isn't too likely anyway.

Predicted Winner: Jerry "The King" Lawler
Yes, for a consecutive three times in a roll, we are still sticking to Lawler to end this once and for all.

Rey Mysterio vs. R-Truth

With the injuries sidelining John Morrison, R-Truth get to take on crowd favorite, Rey Mysterio, who has nothing much on his plate lately, after coming to Raw hot off a heated feud with Cody Rhodes.

The match should be just fine, and probably saddled with an inconclusive finish to further extend the feud.

Predicted Winners: R-Truth
This is the first official PPV match for the newly-turned R-Truth. He either wins it one way or the other or a probable DQ for viciously ignoring the regulation in beating down Mysterio.

Intercontinental Champion Wade Barrett vs. Ezekiel Jackson

The imploding of The (ridiculously named) Corre has turned out to be one hell of a boring affair to watch. And we suspect that it would be the case for this match as well.

Predicted Winners: Wade Barrett
Barrett's credential has been hurt badly in recent times, ever since the formation of The Corre. And it would be even worse if the title switch were to happened in round one of the feud. I wouldn't say the same for round two though.

Sin Cara vs. Chavo Guerrero

Sin Cara, while unfortunately involved in a couple of botched moves earlier when he debuted in Raw, has improved tremendously in his short time at Smackdown. Was it the type of opponents he get at what is generally considered at the B' show, or was it the fact that the show is taped? Regardless, you can expect Chavo Guerrero, given his lineage, to be able to give Cara one hell of an opportunity to pull off those insane high-flying moves. This is what I foresee as the second best match of the night.

Predicted Winners: Sin Cara
This is basically a showcase of Sin Cara's capability to those unfamiliar to him. So it's pretty much a given that the bookers would be getting him over Chavo.

WWE Tag Team Champions Big Show & Kane vs. CM Punk & Mason Ryan

With three high profile Superstars and one up-and-coming rookie on a monster push, are we looking at the resurgence of the dead-in-the-water tag team division in WWE? Don't get your hopes too high yet. We can only see what exactly is in the plans for WWE further down the route, but with Mason Ryan seemingly set on course for a feud with Punk (not unlike that same storyline for The Corre), this is just another filler episode for them.

Predicted Winners: Big Show & Kane
Big Show & Kane to retain, giving some credentials to the titles while adding some much needed star power to Smackdown. Though it is kind of cool to have Punk holding a title.

Divas Champion Brie Bella vs. Kelly Kelly

With Kharma sightings happening everywhere (screw the brand split), this is likely to be the blow-off episode of the plot as Kharma finally have her hands all over Kelly Kelly (as dirty as that might sound).

Predicted Winners: Brie Bella
The hardest part of a WWE PPV prediction is the Divas section. So this is a wild shot since Kharma has yet to be in the title scene yet.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Rundown

Will the unthinkable happen tonight? Will Cena uttered the ever-so-precious magic words? We think not. Not with The Miz anyway. As we have mentioned earlier, the most interesting match in this one would have to be Christian's shot at Orton's title. Apart from that, you get Sin Cara's PPV debut. Are these matches worth your blood money? That's the question you have to ponder before the decision.
