Pixar's Brave Preview: Teaser Trailer, Concept Art, & Poster

Meet Princess Merida, the latest heroine of Pixar's next epic animation film in the first trailer of Pixar's 2012 offering, Brave.

Allow me to clarify myself: When I meant "next epic animation film" up there, I am by no means insinuating or suggesting that the recently released Cars 2 is actually an "epic animation film." While I have not watched the film (which I definitely planed to), my earlier statement is not in anyway a result of the somewhat mild to negative reviews from critics (hey it's Pixar, mind you) but is rather an educated guess based on my perception on the relatively serviceable Cars back in 2006. That said, I did brought up my hopeful prospect on the sequel in our earlier preview for the film, based on the sheer reflection on how Pixar has blown our expectation on an annually basis.

Looking past Cars 2, we are here to talk about Pixar's next film, Brave, which incidentally has had its first teaser trailer released mere hours ago. Without further ado, here is the trailer.

A first for Pixar in more ways than one, Brave marks Pixar's first foray in a fairy tale animation with Merida being the first female protagonist in a Pixar film. The film would have also been the first Pixar film with a female director had its original director, Brenda Chapman (who incidentally also conceived the project), not been replaced by Mark Andrews last October. While Andrews are now confirmed as the director of the film, Chapman will still be credited as the co-director despite no longer participating on the production of the film.

Nevertheless, with a ginger-haired Scottish princess who happened to be good with her bow and arrows, Brave (previously titled The Bear and the Bow) is shaping up to be a break from mold of film genres that we come to be familiar with Pixar.

Here is the synopsis from the official Pixar site:

Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In “Brave,” a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts.

Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Witch (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.

And here's an alternate synopsis of the film:

Brave is set in the mystical Scottish Highlands, where Merida is the princess of a kingdom ruled by King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). An unruly daughter and an accomplished archer, Merida one day defies a sacred custom of the land and inadvertently brings turmoil to the kingdom. In an attempt to set things right, Merida seeks out an eccentric old Wise Woman (Julie Walters) and is granted an ill-fated wish. Also figuring into Merida’s quest — and serving as comic relief — are the kingdom’s three lords: the enormous Lord MacGuffin (Kevin McKidd), the surly Lord Macintosh (Craig Ferguson), and the disagreeable Lord Dingwall (Robbie Coltrane).

Here are the first images from the film, followed by some of the cool concept art released thus far.

Brave is currently scheduled for release on June 22nd, 2012.
