Touché. A politician unwisely acted like a jackass fanboy and runs his mouth on an exceptionally acclaimed TV series and got a response no one saw coming.

The five-season HBO TV series, The Wire, has been consistently touted by many notable personalities (among them, Alan Moore, and President Obama) as the single greatest piece of TV work ever. (Regrettably, we have yet to have our opportunities to get our hands on the show but you can bet the fact that it is indeed high up on our list of "must-watch" TV series.)

So it came to nobody's surprise when Attorney General Eric Holder, a self-confessed fan of the show, declared his fanboy fantasy in a way only a politician knew:

"I want to speak directly to [Co-creator Ed] Burns and Mr. Simon: Do another season of The Wire. That’s actually at a minimum. … If you don’t do a season, do a movie. We’ve done HBO movies, this is a series that deserves a movie. I want another season or I want a movie. I have a lot of power Mr. Burns and Mr. Simon."

Interestingly, the statement was made when Holden invited several cast members from the TV series to Washington to take part in an announcement about an anti-drug campaign he’s currently running through the Department of Justice.

Fans of the TV series would have understand exactly what series co-creator David Simon's thoughts on the war on drugs. So in an intriguing response that made perfect sense in retrospect, Simon made one hell of a retort:

"The Attorney-General’s kind remarks are noted and appreciated. I’ve spoken to Ed Burns and we are prepared to go to work on season six of The Wire if the Department of Justice is equally ready to reconsider and address its continuing prosecution of our misguided, destructive and dehumanising drug prohibition."

Now, time to seek out the DVDs.
