Street Fighter X Mortal Kombat Gets a X From Yoshinori Ono

One of the most talked-about hypothetical crossover between two of the most popular fighting game franchises remained just that. Hypothetical.

In an interview with the PlayStation Blog earlier this week, Street Fighter series producer Yoshinori Ono take on some of the most talked-about questions on the mind of fighting games enthusiasts. The possibility of a crossover game between Capcom' iconic Street Fighter series and Mortal Kombat, the wildly popular fighting games franchise formerly owned by Midway.

PSB: What are some other series that you have considered a crossover with? I know that, in the US, many fans would love to see a Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat…

Ono: I actually get a lot of requests for Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat on my Twitter feed and elsewhere. I understand why people want it, but it’s easier said than done. Having Chun Li getting her spine ripped out, or Ryu’s head bouncing off the floor….it doesn’t necessarily match.

But I’ve had a couple of dream projects in my head for a while, one being Street Fighter X Tekken, which is actually coming true. Another would be a Marvel vs DC game which would be pretty damned cool if we could ever pull it off. I’m a big comic-book fan.

Now if I can get the presidents of those two companies in the same room shaking hands, then we could get something started. I’d love to see that just as a fan!

An honest answer if you asked me. The high level of brutality and gore of Mortal Kombat is almost impossible to be adapted even in dual method a'la Street Fighter X Tekken or Tekken X Street Fighter. Should these signature element be removed from the gameplay, it would be immediately noticeable of the singularity of the characters from Mortal Kombat as compared to Namco's Tekken and Capcom's Street Fighter.

For now, you can only enjoy the fan-made video clip pitting Ken and Chun-li from Street Fighter against Raiden and Goro from Mortal Kombat.
