WATCH Drive Recklessly, A Thought-Provoking PSA

Posted by Grey

This Friday, we bring to you one of the very best PSA (Public Service Announcement) we have seen in a long time.

Being keen observers of the visual, we here at The Daily Zombies have seen our share of intriguing adverts. While we will definitely not be the first to express our distaste of the often propagandistic tools (despite our delight with the firmly tongue-in-cheeks parodies, such as the anti-Slave Leia ones or the one that teaches you how to talk to your kids on Star Wars), we have stumbled upon one particularly interesting one this week... complete with a profound message: Drive Recklessly.

This clever PSA done by the folks from Upright Citizens Brigade's Midnight Show, utilised the reverse psychology in a decidedly, awesome sci-fi way, with the message behind remaining strong and lasting for the viewers.

Batgirl, Catwoman and Wonder Woman in 'Superpoderosas'

Posted by Grey

A trio of DC's most popular superheroines show up in this kinky Mexican advertisement consisting of them getting dressed up. And we are not complaining. Really.

Incidentally, thanks to the handy Google Chrome dictionary extension tool, 'Superpoderosas' means 'powepuff' in Spanish. Which brings to mind the comparison of Craig McCracken's beloved animated series, "The Powerpuff Girls", the tale of three super-powered, crime-fighting girls. Speaking of super-powered, crime-fighting girls, Batgirl, Catwoman and Wonder Woman are undoubtedly some of the most iconic superheroines as far as comic book femme fatales are concerned.

In this Mexican advertisement for "El Palacio de Hierro", translated as "The Iron Palace," which according to my Dictionary tool is "an upscale chain of department stores in Mexico", the super-trio embraced their femininity in fashionable ways, following the tagline of the advert closely: "Women have always known that a change of clothes makes us powerful."

Campyness aside, the production value of the advert is laudable especially with a cool recreation of Batgirl's Batcycle. Not to mention a more appropriate depiction of Catwoman from her latest comic iteration.

Gerwell's The Legend of Zelda ???

French artist Gerwell take on the popular characters from Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda.

In an effort to inject a more apparent sense of Japanese aesthetics into the otherwise severely westernized look of Nintendo's wildly popular action-adventure video game series, The Legend of Zelda, French artist Gerwell worked on the reimagining of some of the main characters from the series. And the results are awe-inspiring.

In Gerwell's own words:

I just wanted to make some designs for some Zelda game!
I have a vague idea of what the plot would be, and the particularity of the game would be that most dungeons would be done with the help of Sheik. Duos forever!

So...Link, random forest kids, Sheik, Princess Zelda and Ganondorf! I hope this isn't out of spirit, I wanted Japanese touch in the designs, and OFF with Zelda's pink dresses!

I might add some characters later. Not sure at all.

DC Comics from Fringe's Alternate Universe

Posted by Grey

With last week's release of "Beyond the Fringe", the new digital comic series released by DC Comics to coincide the start of the fourth season of Fox TV series, Fringe, we take a retrospective look at some of the intriguing titles DC has been producing for the critically acclaimed TV series.

With the much-anticipated return of cult sci-fi TV series Fringe in its fourth season last week, DC Comics announced the release of "Beyond the Fringe", a new digital comic series written by Peter Bishop himself, actor Josh Jackson. While serving as a bridge between seasons three and four of the show, the series also explore a series of "what if" alternative scenarios.

Incidentally, this is far from the first time the path between DC and Fringe crossed. Earlier on in the season finale of season two, we have a few glimpses at comic books published by DC... from the alternate universe. From "Red Lantern/Red Arrow", "Death of Batman" (no, not Final Crisis), to "The Man of Steel Returns", we had a truly eye-opening look at the alternate universe thanks to numerous artists from Carlos D’Anda (concept art for Batman: Arkham Asylum), to JJ Kirby (The Authority: Lost Year).

You can learn all about how the project came along and the creative processes of these mock covers at DC’s the Source blog. In the meantime, hit the jump to check out these amazing mock covers.

Here's the official press release for "Beyond the Fringe":

‘Beyond the Fringe’ Series is Written with Series Star Josh Jackson and Created by DC Entertainment

September 21, 2011 – Burbank, Calif., – Just in time for the start of its fourth season on September 23, critically acclaimed TV show FRINGE (Fridays 9/8c on FOX) debuted today a new digital comic series “Beyond the Fringe.” Created by DC Entertainment, written with series star Josh Jackson and featuring cover art by Drew Johnson, the first arc of “Beyond the Fringe” will explore key events that take place between seasons three and four on the show and will also explore a series of “what if” alternative scenarios.

“We received a great response from fans to previous ‘Fringe’ comics, and I’m especially excited to see their reaction to ‘Beyond the Fringe’ as we further integrate the story into the mythos of the show. And of course, we’re thrilled to be working with Josh Jackson in his debut as a comic book writer,” stated Hank Kanalz, senior vice president of digital for DC Entertainment.

The new series will alternate every two weeks between “A” and “B” storylines for a total of 14 chapters. “A” storylines will explore events tied directly to the “Fringe” show canon, while “B” storylines will take a “what-if” approach and look at how things might change if certain elements are out of balance. “Fringe” star Josh Jackson is on board to write “Peter and the Machine,” an arc comprising the first three “A” issues and which will detail events that take place in the timeline between what viewers saw happen at the end of season three, and the start of season four.

“Beyond the Fringe” is the third comic series based on the popular drama. New issues of “Beyond the Fringe” will be released every two weeks this fall at $.99 per download. Issue #1 is available for download today online at read.dccomics.com or on mobile devices through the DC Comics app.

Premiering its fourth season on September 23 at 9pm ET/PT on FOX, FRINGE is an acclaimed procedural thriller that follows the Fringe Team as they investigate unbelievable events and mysterious occurrences linked throughout the world in pursuit of a larger, more shocking truth. The series stars Anna Torv, Josh Jackson, John Noble, Lance Reddick, Blair Brown, Jasika Nicole and Seth Gabel. Created by J.J. Abrams & Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci, FRINGE is produced by Bad Robot Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. Abrams, Bryan Burk, Jeff Pinkner, J.H. Wyman and Joe Chappelle serve as executive producers, while Kurtzman, Orci and Akiva Goldsman are consulting producers. Additionally, Pinkner and Wyman serve as the series’ showrunners. DC Entertainment, home to iconic brands DC Comics (Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, The Flash, etc.), Vertigo (Sandman, Fables, etc.) and MAD, is the creative division charged with strategically integrating across Warner Bros. and Time Warner. DC Entertainment works in concert with many key Warner Bros. divisions to unleash its stories and characters across all media, including but not limited to film, television, consumer products, home entertainment, and interactive games. Publishing thousands of comic books, graphic novels and magazines each year, DC Entertainment is the largest English-language publisher of comics in the world.

For those interested to know more about the title, you might want to check out The Source for an interview with Josh Jackson on the project. True to the TV series's regular secretive nature, the interview interestingly provided next-to-zero hint about the book.

I'm Loving IT

"Pennywise the Dancing Clown", AKA It, is arguably one of the scariest movie monster around. Here, illustrator Nik Holmes pays tribute in an awesome mash-up.

Offered last week at TeeFury, illustrator Nik Holmes's incredible mash-up of McDonald's very own mascot, Ronald McDonald, and "Pennywise the Dancing Clown" from "It", the 1990 acclaimed miniseries based on Stephen King's 1986 novel of the same name. And the result is deliciously creepy, given the fact that it was mentioned in the novel that the monstrous creature is a "combination of Bozo, Clarabell and Ronald McDonald."

In the artist's own words:

There are a lot of people who find Pennywise to be on the creepier end of the clown spectrum, but I've met a few who aren't quite so selective in their definition of 'Freaky Ass clowns' and happily place Mr McDonald up there with him. So to celebrate those white faced ghouls of mirth I created this print. There may be those who see this as some kind of pseudo political corporate satire, but I just wanted to give kids nightmares about their next happy meal.

The tee is still available at for $10 at TeeFury

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn Preview: New Trailer & Images

Posted by Grey

Game for a good old fashioned adventure filled with fun, danger, friendship, and a little awesome companion dog by the name of Snowy? We take a comprehensive look at Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson's The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn with the second trailer and newly-released images from the fully animated motion-capture 3-D film.

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, the fully animated motion-capture 3-D film directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Peter Jackson, has quite a showing at the Comic-Con, capturing many attention for the CGI adaptation of legendary Belgian artist Georges "Hergé" Remi's timeless comic strips, "The Adventures of Tintin".

While the "uncanny valley" effect will undoubtedly be in full examination by the time the film gets released (as a result of the disastrous box-office returns of Mars Needs Moms in March), we remained rather hopeful for the film with Spielberg in his element and on the strength of the collaborative creative efforts behind the film.

With a screenplay by notable talents like Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish, and Peter Jackson on board as producer, the film packs more behind-the-scene punch than the conventional Christmas blockbuster. Jamie Bell will be lending his voice as the world-famous (not quite for US, unfortunately) protagonist, Tintin, with Andy Serkis (as Captain Haddock), Daniel Craig (as villain Red Rackham), as well as Nick Frost and Simon Pegg (as detective duo, Thomson and Thompson, respectively) rounding up the star-studded cast.

Check out the second trailer of the film right after the jump.

Here's the official synopsis of the film:

Paramount Pictures and Columbia Pictures Present a 3D Motion Capture Film “The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn” directed by Steven Spielberg from a screenplay by Steven Moffat and Edgar Wright & Joe Cornish. Starring Jamie Bell (“Billy Elliot,” “Defiance”) as Tintin, the intrepid young reporter whose relentless pursuit of a good story thrusts him into a world of high adventure, and Daniel Craig (“Quantum of Solace,” “Defiance”) as the nefarious Red Rackham.

More than a dozen of new images from the Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson's The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn have been released online. Hit the jump to check them (as usual, click on the images for the hi-res version).
