Diablo III: BlizzCon 2011

Held at the Anaheim Convention Center in California, BlizzCon 2011 kicked off yesterday with some mind-blowing news for the much-anticipated Diablo III.

Kicking off BlizzCon 2011 with a bang, Blizzard Entertainment dropped a few bombshell at the Anaheim Convention Center in California with some intriguing details on the pending release of Diablo III as well as the release of a cool new cinematic trailer for the much-anticipated third installment in the Diablo franchise.

First and foremost, Diablo III will be free to play for all World of Warcraft subscribers with an annual pass. By signing up for the World of Warcraft annual pass (to be paid on a monthly basis) with a twelve-month commitment to the popular MMORPG, players will get Diablo III for free upon its official launch some time in the first quarter next year. In addition, players will also received guaranteed access to the next World of Warcraft expansion beta once it goes live.

Apart from the stellar announcement, Blizzard also showed off the Ultimate Edition of Diablo III, complete with obligatory items like an artbook, original soundtrack, behind-the-scenes special, exclusive in-game contents, as well as relatively cheap-looking skull. A new cinematic trailer entitled "The Dark Soulstone" was presented at the event. In the clip, Deckard Cain's niece, Leah (voiced by Jennifer Hale, notable for her turn as FemShep in BioWare's Mass Effect), while in the midst of reading her uncle's mysterious notes, was suddenly thrown into a hellish dimension where Azmodan, Lord of Sin, declares his dark plans for Sanctuary.

Finally, in commemoration of the fifteenth anniversary of Diablo, a special retrospective video detailing the storied history of Diablo was put together by Blizzard, complete with a narration by Senior Vice President Chris Metzen.
