Mary Norton's Borrowers go anime in Studio Ghibli’s The Secret World of Arrietty.

Mary Norton's 1952 children's fantasy novel, The Borrowers, is memorable for many reasons and for many, it is perhaps the 1992 BBC miniseries that induced those lovely childhood nostalgia. Which explained our delight upon learning that acclaimed anime studio, Studio Ghibli (the folks that brought us Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Ponyo, among numerous other brilliant anime films), having their take on the beloved children novel.

Written by Hayao Miyazaki himself and Keiko Niwa, The Secret World of Arrietty, known in UK as simply Arrietty, is Hiromasa Yonebayashi's directorial debut following his previous animation stint on earlier films from Studio Ghibli. Released in Japan on July 17th last year, the film has went on to became the highest grossing film in the Japanese box office in 2010 and was honored with the Animation of the Year award at the 34th Japan Academy Prize award ceremony.

Here's the official synopsis for the film:

The Clock family are four-inch tall "little people" who live anonymously in another family's residence, borrowing simple items to make their home. Life changes for the Clocks when their daughter, Arrietty, is discovered.

Having been released in both France and the UK, The Secret World of Arrietty is currently scheduled to be released on February 17th, 2012, in the United States by Walt Disney Pictures.
