Art of Real Steel

Witness the painstakingly produced concept art behind Real Steel, courtesy of iO9 and the film's lead concept artist Victor Martinez.

Real Steel, Shawn Levy and Hugh Jackman's white-knuckled sci-fi film with a sports-movie underdog theme, was far from being the movie of the year, but the film is surprisingly capable with its unrelenting mix of goofy fun, good ol' fashioned father-and-son's estranged relationship, cool rock 'em, sock 'em robot-on-robot heavy metal action, adding up into an unabashed blockbuster film that is actually an entertaining fun ride.

Apart from the aforementioned factors, an intriguing yet constantly overlooked positive element would be the design of the robot boxers in the film. For those with a keen eye on the trend of robot designs be it in the animes or the latest sci-fi movies, it is immediately noticeable that these machines in Real Steel are distinctly different from the regular metalheads the likes of Transformers.

Thanks to iO9, who spoke at length with Real Steel's lead concept artist and robot designer, Victor Martinez, in a cool interview, we also get to check out some of the early concept art of the film. Do head over to iO9 to learn more on the design process of the robots. In the meantime, check out these cool images from the article.
