WWE Survivor Series Preview

Never Before. Never Again.

Taking place tonight at the Madison Square Garden in New York City, Titans collide at the 25th annual Survivor Series event as The Rock team up to face The Miz and R-Truth in an epic encounter. The Daily Zombies take a final look at the much-anticipated event.

Never Before. Never Again. With a tagline as such and this being a storyline in the turbulent world of professional wrestling, known for being an ever-changing environment, all we want to say is "Never say Never."

One month removed from Vengeance and the end of the god-awful tedious PPV schedule, we caught a breath with the build-up for Survivor Series, one of the "Big Four" events of WWE, along with WrestleMania, Royal Rumble and SummerSlam. And while things over at SmackDown continues to run smoothly with the monster story of current World Heavyweight Champion Mark Henry, things over at Raw continues its unbelievable spiral downward to mediocrity in spite of the return of The Great One, The Rock.

Back on the topic at hand, the 25th annual Survivor Series is now one of the longest-running PPVs in the history of professional wrestling despite some close call for Vince McMahon to end the franchise earlier last year. With the event set to be held at Madison Square Garden accompanied with the stellar in-ring return (fighting, not talking) of The Rock, the show is shaping up to be one hell of an event, in spite of the abysmal build-up.

With The Rock and John Cena taking on the Awesome Truth (R-Truth and The Miz), there is no doubt which match will get to be the show-closing main event, title or no title. CM Punk finally gets his one-on-one title rematch with reigning WWE Champion, Alberto Del Rio, since losing the title via the Money in the Bank opportunity that was cashed out by the Mexican Superstar. After their last encounter brought both opponents down along with the very ring itself, the World's Strongest Man, Mark Henry, will once again put his title on the line against Big Show.

Paying homage to the history of the event, SmackDown's number-one guy, Randy Orton, leads Sheamus, Mason Ryan, Kofi Kingston and Sin Cara against opposing team captain Wade Barrett, along with members Cody Rhodes, Jack Swagger, Hunico and Dolph Ziggler. Meanwhile, for the consecutive second PPV, Ziggler will be pulling yet another double-duty defending his United States title, this time against John Morrison. Another rematch from last month's Vengeance, the Glamazon Beth Phoenix will yet again defend her Divas Championship against challenger Eve Torres.

For those keeping the score, out of the eight-match card on Vengeance, we scored a near-perfect 7:1, only slipping with the WWE Tag Team Championship match between reigning champions Air Boom (Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne) and Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger. Will our winning streak continue with Survivor Series? Let's see as we proceed with the rundown of the show.

John Cena & The Rock vs. The Miz & R-Truth

Finally! The Rock has come back to the WWE, and for the first time in more than seven years, The Most Electrifying Man In All Entertainment will be in action. With John Cena. And it goes a long way to tell you what an utterly pathetic job the booking for this main event has been like that my number one favorite wrestler of all time returns for a match for the first time in more than seven years and here I am, feeling lukewarm about the whole thing.

What could be the reason behind the abysmal booking? Could it be simply-put lazy work from the writers, sitting on their laurels thinking that it's The Great One's big bang in-ring return and it's freaking Madison Square Garden, and they can just sit back, relax and everything will just fall into its places by itself? Or is there a diabolical scheme, a game-changing storyline waiting in the wing? The intrigue behind this very question will in fact define how the show will go down. More on that later.

The action should be good with Cena, The Miz, and R-Truth stepping up their game with The Rock's omnipotent presence as well as the maddeningly loud audience from Madison Square Garden. So in a way, no matter the results, this is going down to be one of the most unforgettable moments in WWE, and the world of professional wrestling itself.

Predicted Winner: The Awesome Truth (The Miz and R-Truth)
Do not be overtly alarmed by the fact that one of the biggest names in the history of professional wrestling made a stunning in-ring return after more than seven years only to lose. When Cena made the totally anti-climatic choice of picking The Rock as his tag-team partner against The Awesome Truth, red herrings were everywhere.

The online pundits have long been speculating the long-anticipated heel-turn of John Cena. As a matter of fact, here at The Daily Zombies, we actually made the exact same speculation for our preview of last year's Survival Series when John Cena was made to referee the WWE Championship match between Randy Orton and Wade Barrett. Of course, we were wrong and the entire wrestling world suffered a year of John Cena's campy manliness jokes. Will we make the same mistake this year? Actually, we don't really have to. Having The Rock and Cena in a tag-team is in itself a booking indicative of screw-jobs anywhere you look. The team WILL implode, just so to create more friction and in turn, hype as well as anticipation for the upcoming WrestleMania XXVIII.

While we agreed that the time has never been more ripe for a John Cena heel-turn, and would be the first to admit our undying desire for that to happen, we are so disappointed in WWE's recent booking decisions to make the bold leap of faith in predicting that they will pull the trigger on this one. As screw-jobs will definitely happen, we are expecting one from Cena since The Rock has screwed him once during WrestleMania XXVII, and once for the past Raw.

In summary, Cena may or may not turn heel during this match, but we are pretty certain that The Rock will be getting an Attitude Adjustment and The Miz adds The Great One into the long list of opponents he had pinned.

WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio vs. CM Punk

While this is not the first time the two opponents had an one-on-one encounter (having had one ho-hum singles match at Raw months ago), the scale of this one is far more different and we are having one of the greatest arenas in the history of professional wrestling, the audiences of Madison Square Garden. Responses from the vocal males will no doubt be overwhelming for the Straight-edge Superstar and we are expecting something infinitely better than what we have witnessed months ago.

Predicted Winner: Alberto Del Rio
While I am of the belief that Punk is poised to have his hands on the WWE Championship before long, I opined that next month's TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs might just be a better show to get the job done for Punk. Given Punk's hardcore nature and the fact that Del Rio needs more time with the WWE Championship on his hands, we are expecting a rematch between Del Rio and Punk next month with the eponymous stipulation.

That said, we do hoped that Punk does win the title next month, followed by him dropping the title to a heel Cena at Royal Rumble, who then takes the title to WrestleMania XXVIII to face The Rock as promised. While we still don't feel that the WWE Championship is really needed for the main event at WrestleMania XXVIII, if it eventually does, this would be the way to do it.

World Heavyweight Champion Mark Henry vs. Big Show

The World's Strongest Man, Mark Henry and The Biggest Athlete in The World literally tore the ring down in their last encounter. Will thunder strike twice here? The build-up to the two giants' feud has been interesting to say the least. Adding in the current Mr. Money in the Bank, Daniel Bryan, has made it even more intriguing. However, if talks of a third round of Henry vs. Show is indeed true, this match-up here might just be a placeholder in the series.

Predicted Winner: Mark Henry
The Hall of Pain will continue given the recent ratings success for SmackDown since the title reign of Henry. Expect a DQ or a double K.O. not unlike the results of last month, as we move on to the third installment of Henry vs. Show.

Team Orton vs. Team Barrett (5-on-5 Traditional Survivor Series Tag Team Match)

Team Barrett, led by captain Wade Barrett, is made up of Cody Rhodes, Jack Swagger, Hunico and Dolph Ziggler while Team Orton is led by captain Randy Orton with members consisting of Sheamus, Mason Ryan, Kofi Kingston and Sin Cara.

We have always enjoyed such matches that while serving as a nod to the Survivor Series tradition, also develop the ongoing storylines for a collection of feuds. Here, we have Orton and Rhode's, Orton and Barrett's, Sheamus and Christian's (while the absence of Captain Charisma will be sorely missed, we are certain that he will be making an appearance at the ringside), as well as Cara and Hunico's on the table. In addition, the match also served to cover up Evan Bourne's absence (currently suspended due to health violation) as well as something we are pretty loathsome about: The build-up of Mason Ryan.

Match quality-wise, this should be a good one given the combined talents of all the participants. That said, Ziggler should be eliminated earlier due to his double-duty.

Predicted Winners: Team Barrett
What better way to continue Wade Barrett's self-styled "Barrett Barrage" with an impressive PPV victory that will also serve to enhance the other members on the team?

United States Champion Dolph Ziggler vs. John Morrison

In a somewhat obscure development, reigning US Champion Dolph Ziggler will be up for a double-duty tonight for consecutively two PPVs. With Morrison perhaps wearing off his "Bad Romance" curse (a blatant reference to his real-life girlfriend, Melina) and finally shaking off his never-ending losing streak to Ziggler on the last Raw, it has however been puzzling why John Laurinaitis chose Morrison over Ryder for a US Championship title shot despite Ryder's ongoing petition for the opportunity. Which of course means something is in the work with this one.

With Ziggler on double-duty, we expect this one to be relatively brief.

Predicted Winner: Dolph Ziggler
Ziggler has been impressive lately, both on the mic and in ring. We are predicting a run at the real gold for him later down the line. But with the outstanding issue between Ryder and him, we are of the opinion that this is just another chapter in Ziggler's remarkable US Championship reign.

Divas Champion Beth Phoenix vs. Eve (Lumberjill Match)

Last month's match between Eve and Phoenix was surprisingly good, especially with the audience long-tortured by the seemingly never-ending series of Divas title bout between Kelly Kelly and Beth Phoenix.

The match quality should be fine with Eve applying her MMA background to good use and Phoenix playing her dominant role.

Predicted Winners: Beth Phoenix
While Phoenix's title reign is poised to extend, the "Sister of Salvation" (or the "Divas of Doom") storyline really need some retooling by now given its similarity to last year's LayCool plot.

The Rundown

We said it before and we will say it again. It's the last "Big Four" PPV of the year. It's Madison Square Garden. It's The Rock. And it's The Rock's first-ever in-ring appearance in more than seven years. Nuff said.
