The Last of Us - VGA Trailer: Zombie of the Week

Posted by Grey Friday, December 16, 2011

First unveiled at last Sunday's Spike Video Game Awards (VGA), Naughty Dog's upcoming Survival Horror Action-Adventure video game exclusively for Sony PlayStation 3 is without a shadow of a doubt our Zombie of the Week.

First teased before last Sunday's Spike Video Game Awards (VGA) on a billboard in Times Square of "a PS3 exclusive you won't believe", The Last of Us is perhaps everything we can reasonably ask for of a Sony PlayStation 3 exclusive: Zombies meet Naughty Dog, the Santa Monica-based video game developer that brought us the awe-inspiring Uncharted series.

Are we far from a Survival Horror video game nirvana complete with a post-apocalyptic wasteland filled with unique zombie-like creatures with a gameplay narrative heavy with characterization for its protagonists?

Based on the eerily impressive trailer, we just might be in for one hell of a ride with this one. With no further ado, hit the jump to check out the clip.

Here's what Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells has to say about the title, courtesy of the
PlayStation Blog:

The Last of Us is a genre-defining experience that blends survival and action elements to tell a character driven tale about a modern plague decimating mankind. Nature encroaches upon civilization, forcing remaining survivors to kill for food, weapons and whatever they can find. Joel, a ruthless survivor, and Ellie, a brave young teenage girl who is wise beyond her years, must work together to survive their journey across what remains of the United States.

With an unique design complete with horrifying fungal growth on their appearance, the infected zombie-like creatures in this title are definitely giving the usual zombie apocalypse video games a run of their money. And with the trailer evoking a doom-and-gloom sense of urgency and sadness not unlike that of the live-action adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's The Road, we are quite hopeful with the prospect of this one.
