Marvel Unveils Avengers vs. X-Men

Posted by Grey Wednesday, December 7, 2011

While the casual movie fan boys gonna hope in an eternity that the X-Men will take on the Avengers in a balls-to-the-walls all-out battle scene in the movies... Here in the comic books, with the umpteenth coming of the Phoenix Force, the battle to determine the fate of Earth is about to erupt between Earth's Mightiest Heroes and the Mutants in Avengers vs. X-Men!

By now, any keen Marvel Zombies who are actively online would have know that "It's Coming" teaser and how everything going to fall into its places on Wednesday with that whole Marvel promotion going on.

Yes, we knew that Phoenix will rise for the umpteenth time, and we have gotten enough hint that Hope Summers, the first mutant since Decimation is the reincarnation of Jean Grey from way back. But what would be the actual impact when the inevitable event actually happen? Well, that would be Marvel's 2012 major event then.

The omnipotent cosmic entity that represents both destruction and rebirth who famously possessed Jean Grey in a classic X-Men storyline is back once more, just like we predicted it (if you have not, screw you. You are not a bona fide comic reader). At the same time, we have been waiting for Hope Summers, the new hope of mutant whom Matt Faction, the co-writer of the new series described as "some people treat her as though she's a messiah, some people treat her as though she's a monster, and really she's just like any 17-year-old kid," to concede to her destiny. But we never exactly foresaw a reignited feud between the mighty Avengers and the X-Men.

Truth be told, back when we saw how Cyclops rejuvenated the X-Men in the pages of The Uncanny X-Men, we did somehow got a foreboding sense of this happening: A battle royale between Earth's Mightiest Heroes and the Mutants. Discounting the 1993 X-Men/Avengers storyline Bloodties where the fall-out from the game-changing consequences from the famous Fatal Attractions" story line were explored (for the uninformed, Magneto got his mind wiped clean), the last time we saw these heroes tussle, it was in 1987 where an all-out war between the Avengers and the X-Men broke out in Singapore in the pages of four-issue-limited series, The X-Men vs. The Avengers.

Here's a round-up for the upcoming event, courtesy of USA Today:

Kicking off in a special "zero issue" prologue in March written by Bendis and Aaron, Avengers vs. X-Men begins the next month with an extinction-level event barreling its way toward Earth, namely the cosmic entity of death and rebirth known as the Phoenix Force. It's looking for a new host who will possess all of its power, which may or may not be the mutant teenager Hope Summers.

Cyclops, Wolverine, Magneto and the other X-Men want to protect her and prepare her if she's to be the new Phoenix. Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man and their fellow Avengers want her handed over to them so they can figure out what to do with her and keep the world safe from a potentially fiery fate.

Avengers vs. X-Men will be set in a bi-weekly 12-issues series that is set to launch in March 2012 with a special #0 prologue issue illustrated by Frank Cho with focus on two pivotal characters, Hope Summers and the Scarlet Witch. Matt Fraction, Jason Aaron, Ed Brubaker, Brian Michael Bendis and Jonathan Hickman will be the writers alternating issues from the series while John Romita Jr., Olivier Coipel and Adam Kubert will be providing their arts in respectively four-issue arcs.
