Source Code Preview: Posters & Trailer

Had enough mind-trip with the unpleasantly mediocre and uneventful Sucker Punch? Well, how about one more this weekend? From Duncan Jones, the director behind the critically acclaimed hard Sci-Fi film, Moon, Source Code promises one mind-trip not be overlooked.

We here at The Daily Zombies are, quite simply put, suckers for high concept films. But as high concept as these niche films go, no, I find the entire "Sucker Punch" experience to be unnecessarily repugnant. Nevertheless, that does not make us any less receptive of films bold enough to roll out innovative ideas. And with Duncan Jones, the mind behind the surprisingly brilliant "Moon", Source Code is one mind-trip we would not want to miss.

Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, the Sci-Fi film will not be following path of hard Sci-Fi like Moon, and would be employing a particularly amazing Sci-Fi device that allowed the protagonist to experience what reads like a hard Sci-Fi version of Groundhog Day.

Here's the official synopsis, courtesy of the film's Facebook page:

When decorated airman Captain Colter Stevens (Gyllenhaal) wakes up in the body of an unknown man, he discovers he's part of a mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train. In an assignment unlike any he's ever known, he learns he's part of a government experiment called the "Source Code", a program that enables him to cross over into another man's identity in the last 8 minutes of his life. With a second much larger target threatening to kill millions in downtown Chicago, Colter re-lives the incident over and over again, gathering clues each time, until he can solve the mystery of who is behind the bombs and prevent the next attack.

So how exactly does this insanely dreamy technology work? You are pretty much out of your mind if you expect a straight-up answer on that one but this short clip from the film tries to help.

Also starring Vera Farmiga as Carol Goodwin (as you probably would have noticed from the above clip), the military officer in charge of the operation, and Michelle Monaghan as an "unlikely" love interest, here is the official trailer of the film.

Source Code is slated to be release this April Fool's Day. So now we know Super gonna have a major opponent.

Here are the posters from the film that have since been released.

For those are left cold by the somewhat mediocre poster designs, check out this cool fan-made poster created by Lloyd Stas. The fan art was picked by Jones in his Twitter account.

More retro Batman to quench your thirst for campiness after cancellation of NBC's The Cape. With a little kiddy twist.

Uncovered by Comics Alliance, this short fan film pays tribute to the iconic, campy Batman TV series in the 1960s with a little twist: all cast of characters are played by kids (with the exception of Alfred for some reason).

Here's the official description via YouTube:

Super Preview: Trailers, Stills & Poster

Posted by Grey

The superhero film genre continues to evolve with James Gunn's dark comedy, Super.

Yes, Sucker Punch totally took me by surprise as I was totally "unprepared" by its incredibly mediocrity. But more of that later perhaps. The point here is: Has the 2011 movie smackdown bubble been blown apart with the first massive disappointment? Based on what we have seen so far from Super, the dark comedy scheduled to open this April Fool's Day, rejoice. There are still reasons to remain hopeful, as it would seemed.

Super is directed by James Gunn, the twisted mind behind 2006's Slither, a bold comedic take on the run-of-the-mill zombie horror film that was well-received by critics but tanked at the box office. Adding to the man's credit would be his writing stint on the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead, as well as The Specials, the underrated superhero film that was released in 2000. Constantly overshadowed by Mystery Men, which shared the then-innovative comedic superhero genre, The Specials is perhaps a sign of things to come as we see the release of Super this April.

Rainn Wilson plays down-on-his-luck ordinary man Frank D'Arbo, whose wife (Liv Tyler. yes, not a typo) leaves him for a glamorous drug dealer, Jock (Kevin Bacon). In his despair, Frank transforms himself into the Crimson Bolt on a twisted quest for truth, justice, and his wife back. Joining him on the quest would be his sidekick Boltie (Ellen Page), a truly demented individual more so than Frank.

Want some proof on that? Check out this two short clips from the film to see just how twisted Boltie truly is? Here's Ellen Page at easily one of her best roles ever (and that's saying a lot for a prolific young actress like Page).

Here's the official plot synopsis:

Super is a hyper-real and shockingly funny look at the extremely violent antics of a down-on-his-luck man as he attempts to win his wife back from a glamorous drug dealer by teaming up with a psychopathic teen to become costumed crimefighters.

And here's the official trailer.

Based on what we see in the trailer, the film seems to have answer the hypothetical question: What if Kick-Ass gets darker? More perverse than the generally feel-good film that was released to relative acclaim last year, Super looks to be a more realistic film with subversive tone bordering on disturbing. Super has earlier premiered at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival and is scheduled to be released in the United States on April 1st.

Hit the jump for posters of the film that have been released thus far.

And here are some of the set picture from the film.

"Tonight I'm Frakking You": The Ultimate Geek Fantasy Dance Track

Posted by Grey

Making its round over internet as probably the meme video of the month in February, check out "Tonight I'm Frakking You".

Quite possibly the ultimate geek fantasy cosplay dance video, "Tonight I'm Frakking You" has been massively circulating on the internet for some time before we caught notice of it.

Featuring Caprica's very own Zoe Graystone herself, the adorable Alessandra Torressani in full "Slave Leia" get-up flirting with Juggernaut and later the protagonist in a Mr. Spock outfit at a cosplay bar, the video also spot cameo from Raj from The Big Bang Theory.

Here's the official description from YouTube, followed by the video.

A geek fantasy comes to life when one lucky nerd finds himself in Sci-fi's hottest nightclub with every girl you'd ever want to frak.

And here's the lyrics for those interested.

I'm like Kenobi
Seeking passage to Alderaan with you
We'll watch Big Bang Theory
As you ride my TARDIS and call me Doctor Who

You're into Cosplay (oooh)
Damn that's one fine skin job on you.
Beam Me Up Hottie (oooo oooh)
My Vulcan Logic tells me its time to groove

Across the federation
My Jedi inclination
Tells me that I am a suitable mate for you
We Love Next Generation
Xbox over Playstation
Its time that I tap from your Mana Pool

Cause tonight I'm Frakking You
Whoa you know
That tonight I'm Frakking You
Whoa you know

Are You Gwen Stacey
My Spidey sense says I'd shoot my web all on you
I'm No Fergengi
I drop more coin than Mario on mushrooms

Your Dharma education
Delorean transporation
Revs my engine to warp speed like Mr. Sulu
Dollhouse's cancellation
Hurt like Luke's amputation
Its time to Mork Me and say Nanoo Nanoo

Cause tonight I'm Frakking You
Whoa you know
That tonight I'm Frakking You
Whoa you know

Ha! Kunal...
Let's Meet Up In Naboo
We'll roll around like R2-D2
You've set my phasers to stun
Cause your Sarlaac Pit's
Got more spice in it
Than the planet Dune

From Asgard's
Hallowed halls
Everybody big bangs Kunal
Gotham or Hogwarts
My Broad Sword'll Be the one
Thing To Rule them all

Lets clone your body
Join them all together to form a Guild
and go on a Quest
We can use my expansion pack
Then I'll take you down like Boba Fett
Up Up, Down Down
Left, Right, Left Right
B, A, Select then Start
Its time to one-up
Thirty lives with you, (cuz tonight I'm)

Cuz tonight I'm Frakking You
Whoa you know
That tonight I'm Frakking You
Whoa you know
That tonight I'm Frakking You

Superman Classic: The Ultimate Animated Superman Fan Film

Posted by Grey

For fans of Max Fleischer's iconic Superman animations, this is a fan film not to be missed.

Reminiscent of Max Fleischer's classic Superman cartoons back in 1940s, animator and storyboard artist Robb Pratt has created one hell of an awesome short animated film in "Superman Classic".

Pratt, who has previously worked on Disney animations such as Pocahontas, Kim Possible, and Fantasia 2000, created this one-minute short with the idea of combining the modern day digital animation with traditional hand-drawn cartoon, along with the music of the 1948 Superman serial. Notably, he managed to enlist the help of actor John Newton, who previously played the role of the Man of Steel in in the first season of the 1988 Superboy TV series, while Lois Lane was voiced by his wife Jennifer.

Thor Vs. Hollywood Creatures

Posted by Grey

Before Marvel's Norse God of Thunder take on the film critics, he has to go through the famous creatures of Hollywood first.

We have seen Marvel cross-promoting for its parent company Disney with Tron: Legacy by publishing variant covers on its titleslast December, so it isn't too much of stretch that Marvel is rolling out a new variant cover campaign for its very own upcoming film, Thor. Pitting the God of Thunder against famous Hollywood creatures, the campaign known as "Thor Goes Hollywood" will be rolling out across April with Heroes for Hire #5 and Uncanny X-Force #7 being the first two titles involved. Painter Greg Horn will be working on a Jaws tribute for the variant cover for Heroes for Hire #5 while Mike Del Mundo take on Frankenstein in Uncanny X-Force #7. Expect more to come along.

Here's the official press release, courtesy of Comic Book Resources:

The God of Thunder is headed west! Marvel is proud to announce the Thor Goes Hollywood series of variant covers in honor of the Odinson’s upcoming feature film debut. Hitting comics shop just before the release of Marvel Studios’ Thor this May, the covers will see the Mighty Avenger recast in some of cinema’s most iconic roles.

“Fans couldn’t be more excited to finally see Thor hit the big screen and we feel the exact same way,” said Senior Vice President of Sales David Gabriel. “Having Thor pay homage to some of film’s most memorable onscreen moments is just one of the ways that Marvel hopes to broaden Thor’s appeal across all areas of popular culture.”

Marvel urges retailers to check their orders on these hotly anticipated variant covers as Thor continues to generate major mainstream interest in the months to come. No Marvel fan will want to miss the striking results when Thor Goes Hollywood this May!

Ulises Farina's DC Vs. Marvel Battle Mural

Posted by Grey

We have previously featured illustrator Ulises Alfonso Farinas in several occasion (Batman Loses, Lego version of Doctor Who, as well as that of DC, Marvel, and the Star Trek Universe). And now behold his magnum opus... A massive battle mural pitting the DC Universe against the Marvel Universe (with a few Amalgam characters thrown in for fun sake).

Commissioned by Comics Alliance to commemorate the upcoming 15th anniversary of the Marvel vs. DC crossover, Ulises Alfonso Farinas came out all guns ablazing to bring us this incredible battle mural art featuring the superheroes from the DC Universe and the Marvel Universe going mano-a-mano against each, with some characters from Amalgam (the meta-universe co-created by DC Comics and Marvel Comics where the two comic book publishers merged their characters to create new ones during 1996's Marvel vs. DC series) thrown in for good measure.

What's more, Comics Alliance is challenging fans to take on a game of spotting hidden characters and items, all in the totally non-copyright infringing spirit of the Where's Waldo books.

Main mission of the game: Find the Invisible Woman. Hint: This would have been totally insane have I not been paying particular attention to Batman after checking out Farina's Batman Loses. For those interested in the Where's Waldo quest, do check out the vastly superior hi-res version at Comics Alliance.

A Chinese Ghost Story 《倩女幽魂》Preview: Stills & Trailer - Undead Monday

Posted by Grey

This Undead Monday, we bring you a preview of the remake of one of the most well-regarded Hong Kong film ever, A Chinese Ghost Story 《倩女幽魂》.

Directed by Ching Siu-tung, and produced by notable Hong Kong filmmaker Tsui Hark in 1987, A Chinese Ghost Story 《倩女幽魂》was immensely popular upon release, launching the stardom of Joey Wong, while further cementing the late, great Leslie Cheung his iconic status in Hong Kong cinematic history. An inevitable side effect from the tremendous success of the film would be the endless hordes of films featuring similar theme of folklore ghost story, while the original film spawned several sequels, an animated movie, and a TV series adaptation.

And here we are, twenty-five years removed, with a remake of the classic film scheduled to release in Hong Kong come April.

Directed by Wilson Yip (葉偉信, who previously brought us great action flicks like Donnie Yen's SPL: Sha Po Lang《殺破狼》, Flash Point《導火綫》, and of course, the Ip Man films《葉問》, as well as abominations like the dreaded comic adaptation, Dragon Tiger Gate《龍虎門》), the remake stars Liu Yifei, Yu Shaoqun, and Louis Koo as the the three main characters, Nie Xiaoqian 聶小倩, Ning Caichen 寧采臣, and Yan Chixia 燕赤霞, respectively.

Here's the trailer of the film.

Despite the fact that the original film was made a quarter century ago, we are still not sold on the idea of a competent remake of the classic film. While the special effects and general production values would almost certainly surpass the original, there is an unique kinetic ambiance with the original that even Tsui Hark himself just can't emulate. However, the casting of Louis Koo as the elder Taoist Yan Chixia seemed to imply an additional role of the original character, further confirmed by the trailer and one of the stills below.

Hit the jump to check out the stills from the film.

While we aren't exactly sure what would be the actual English title of the film, it seems like neither does the film studio, with the poster naming it "A Chinese Fairy Tale" while the trailer calling it "A Chinese Ghost Story". The film is currently scheduled with a theatrical release date on April 22nd.
