Ahead of the controversial and extremely buzz-worthy "DC Comics - The New 52" initiative, Marvel does it again.
Remember our reports back in January 2010 on how Marvel, "in an effort to provide assistance to comic retailers in 2010", offered retailers "an opportunity to turn unsold comics into an extremely rare Siege #3 Deadpool Variant!"
For those who remembered the story well, the aforementioned "unsold comics" are Adventure Comics #4, Booster Gold #26, Doom Patrol #4, Justice League Of America #39, Outsiders #24, and R.E.B.E.L.S #10. All of these titles are from Marvel's main competition, DC Comics, and are parts of the DC’s Lantern Rings Promotion of which retailers had to order Blackest Night tie-in books at high levels in order to get generally perceived "collectible" plastic Lantern rings.
And now, ahead of DC Comic's audacious and potentially lucrative "New 52" initiative, Marvel does it again. And they even have a name for it this time.
Dubbed "Comics for Comics," the program offers retailers a rare Ed McGuinness variant of Fear Itself #6 for every fifty covers they send in from a selected few Flashpoint tie-in titles from DC. IT goes without saying that they have yet again claimed that the program is meant to "provide support to comic retailers".
Here's the whole skinny from Marvel's official press release:
As part of Marvel’s unrivaled efforts to provide support to comic retailers in 2011, Marvel is pleased to announce the return of their groundbreaking Comics For Comics program, offering all retailers a chance to turn unsold comics into a rare Marvel variant! The extremely limited edition Fear Itself #6 McGuinness Variant will be made available to retailers who return the covers of select comics. In addition, qualifying retailers will gain exclusive access to a special Marvel sale.
"In these tough economic times, feel it’s our duty to help," explained David Gabriel, Marvel Senior Vice President of Publishing, Sales and Circulation. "After the overwhelmingly positive response to our Comics For Comics programs, through which we received tens of thousands of covers, we’re excited to provide retailers with the chance to help their stores through selling an ultra-rate variant."
Retailers – for every 50 stripped covers of the following comics from the below group sent to Marvel, you will qualify to receive one FREE Fear Itself #6 McGuinness Variant. The 50 stripped covers can be any combination of the comics listed in that group and all submissions need to be received at the Marvel office at the address below by Friday 8/12/2011. Also included with the stripped covers must be your store contact information including Diamond Account # and email address. With boxes of covers arriving every day, Marvel urges retailers to get theirs in by the due date to guarantee themselves copies of this stunning variant.
Retailers with any questions about Marvel’s Comics for Comics program, should e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org for further assistance.
Please note: No second printings, third printings, variants, are accepted as part of this promotion. Only the specific issues of the series listed below are eligible

Talk about the "House of Ideas". Telling people to tear up their rivals' comics is certainly one mean competition-destroying idea.
Ahead of the controversial and extremely buzz-worthy "DC Comics - The New 52" initiative, Marvel does it again.
In Knights of Badassdom, an upcoming horror adventure comedy film set to release next year, follow Peter Dinklage, Summer Glau, Steve Zahn, and True Blood's Ryan Kwanten from the madcap world of LARP (Live-Action Role Players) into the realm of demons.
Perhaps the most appropriate film at the recently ended San Diego Comic-Con, Knights of Badassdom, despite its much smaller scale, made its presence felt at the event.
Directed by Joe Lynch, whose directorial debut was 2007's Wrong Turn 2: Dead End, Knights of Badassdom touched on a facet of the geek culture that has been regularly neglacted: The world of live-action role-playing (LARP). Focusing on the tale of four fellow LARPers (portrayed by Peter Dinklage, Summer Glau, Steve Zahn, and Ryan Kwanten), the plot of the film goes all ""balls to the wall" when the protagonists found themselves accidentally summoned a demon from the underworld. Promised to be an action-packed, funny mix of survival horror and action adventure films, Knights of Badassdom has indeed appealed greatly to both fans of LARP and the lurkers at Comic-Con.
Here's the trailer of the film.
The official synopsis of the film:
Live Action Role Players must become the heroes they've been pretending to be when they accidentally summon a demonic force for real. Starring Steve Zahn, Ryan Kwanten, Summer Glau, Peter Dinklage, Danny Pudi, Margarita Levieva and Jimmi Simpson.
And the more interesting (and revealing) version of the synopsis:
In this comedic fantasy adventure, Joe (Ryan Kwanten) is a heavy metal rocker who's just gone through a painful breakup with his girlfriend, Beth (Margarita Levieva). His concerned roommates (Steve Zahn, Peter Dinklage) kidnap him to their LARP (Live Action Role Playing) gathering, where he enters a realm of fantasy escapism in which pretend knights, elves, and barbarians clash with foam weaponry on a mock battlefield. When Joe's "sorcerer" roommate (Zahn) inadvertently summons a deadly succubus that takes Beth's seductive form, bloody reality crashes down upon their fantasy world. Once LARPers start to turn up dead, the make-believe wizards and warriors must join forces with other adventurers (Summer Glau, Danny Pudi) to become the real life heroes they have been pretending to be and conquer the unleashed evil.
Some of the set pictures released thus far.
Knights of Badassdom is scheduled to released in Spring 2012.
It is official. Michael Bay’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon is set to be the second (or third, depending on how well Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 performs in its last run) highest-grossing film in 2011. Does that means you got to watch it? Cartoonist Lisa Hanawalt is here to help.
Brooklyn-based artist, cartoonist and illustrator Lisa Hanawalt is a multiple-time Ignatz Award winner for her outstanding work on I Want You. She also happened to run a neat blog that regularly spots some nifty stuffs.
In a recent entry, Hanawalt chronicles her heart-wrenching cinematic experience in both words and pictures. To entice you further in this hilarious article, we skipped ahead to the ending images of the review.
Can't wait to get your hands on the upcoming arcade release of Tekken Tag Tournament 2? Have the first taste of the much anticipated fighting game with the upcoming Tekken Hybrid Blu-ray.
Die-hard supporter of PlayStation 3 deeply entrenched in the never-ending battle against supporters of Xbox 360? Here's a little something for you to gloat about if you happened to be a fan of Bandai Namco's Tekken series.
In our earlier debrief on the upcoming Tekken Hybrid Blu-ray, we mentioned that the special Blu-ray Disc, set to be released this Fall, will be bundled with both the Tekken: Blood Vengeance movie and a HD remake of the original Tekken Tag Tournament. And now we stand more than glad to be corrected by Bandai Namco.
As announced at Comic-Con by Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada, Bandai Namco will be slipping a demo preview of the upcoming arcade game in the Tekken Hybrid Blu-ray. Known as Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Prologue, a teaser gameplay video clip were shown at the panel. Featuring fellow Tekken: Blood Vengeance stars Ling Xiaoyu and Alisa Boskonovitch in their respective outfits from the CG film, the two girls were pitted against the dearly-missed Devil. It should be noted that Harada has indicated that Alisa and Xiaoyu will not be the only playable characters in the demo preview.
With not two but three Tekken goodies on one disc, Tekken Hybrid is shaping up to be an item no self-respecting Tekken fans (who owns a PlayStation 3) should be missing.
Along with the announcement, a new trailer of the Blu-ray disc, complete with information on the inclusion of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Prologue has been released.

Hollywood's current fascination with alien invasion continues with Battleship, a science fiction naval war film based on Hasbro's old school naval combat game. Yes, you read me right.
Yes, the very same Hollywood that came up short of delivering Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of H. P. Lovecraft's classic horror novella, "At the Mountain of Madness", and Ron Howard's ambitious take on Stephen King's The Dark Tower series, has the audacity to throw in millions in making a film based on an old school paper-and-pencil game.
While we don't get to see players scratching their heads trying to outmaneuver each other in this live-action adaptation, we do get to see the continued fixation that Hollywood had on the current batches of films as director Peter Berg goes all-out "Michael Bay" pitting Navy fleets against alien invaders. The film stars the upcoming John Carter (of Mars)'s Taylor Kitsch, True Blood's Alexander Skarsgård, Tadanobu Asano, and R&B sensation Rihanna herself, with Liam Neeson adding some much-needed acting creditability.
Here’s the official synopsis for Battleship:
Peter Berg (Hancock) produces and directs Battleship, an epic action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force. Based on Hasbro’s classic naval combat game, Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, a physical therapist and Hopper’s fiancée; Alexander Skarsgard as Hopper’s older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson; Rihanna as Petty Officer Raikes, Hopper’s crewmate and a weapons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones; and international superstar Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone’s superior (and Sam’s father), Admiral Shane.
And here's an alternate version of the synopsis, courtesy of Production Weekly:
A story of an international Navy fleet engaged in a very dynamic and intense battle against an alien race known as "The Regents". The aliens come to planet Earth, on a mission to build a power source in the ocean. Upon their visit, they come in contact with a navy fleet. The film is also purported to show both sides of the story, from the aliens' perspective, as well as the humans' so the audience knows exactly where the opponent's ships are.
Without further ado, here's the trailer (head over to Yahoo! Movies to see the trailer in HD, if you must), followed by the appropriately god-awful first poster.
Learn the awful truth behind Harrison Ford and Chewbacca's far-from-amicable reunion.
Brace yourself for one uproarious reunion as Harrison Ford (in full Han Solo mode at last, for like in a million years) unleashed on Chewbacca behind the set on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
"Daniel Craig's my Wookie Bitch now!" Now that's a line that should be front and center of every Cowboys and Aliens posters.
Witness the cinematic Avengers assembled for the first time ever in this preview clip to the first teaser trailer of Joss Whedon's The Avengers!
Last week's Comic-Con brought us our first look at the concept art of Marvel's The Avengers. Now, to cap off your thirst for the ultimate Marvel zombie fan-favorite project, have a glimpse at all your favorite Marvel superheroes assembled on the big screen for the first time.
While it is not entirely a secret by now that a full teaser trailer of The Avengers was shown as the post-credits kicker of Captain America: The First Avenger, Marvel has for some reason decided to release a preview of the teaser trailer along with the last scene of Captain America: The First Avenger. Although the preview is just a 12-second clip to the full teaser trailer in the theater, it did gave us a marvelous dose of what to expect for what many has called the most anticipated film of the year.
Without further ado, here's the clip (head over to Yahoo! to view it in full HD), followed by some of the cool screenshots from the clip, featuring almost every character in full superhero garb... with the exception of Robert Downey, Jr., as Tony Stark, in a Black Sabbath t-shirt.
Meanwhile, on a separate note, we have come across an awesome fan-made poster that have amazingly captured the respective characters in the earlier mentioned official concept art banner into one awesome standard-sized movie poster. Hit the jump to check it out.
