311 Great East Japan Earthquake: One Year On

Posted by Grey Sunday, March 11, 2012

One year on after the catastrophic 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami that struck Eastern Japan, we have a look at Japan.

On this very day last year, we here at The Daily Zombies were, for lack of a better description, stunned by the "toughest and most difficult crisis since the end of World War II" (as mentioned by then-Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan), despite our usual sardonic self.

A series of articles keeping track of the media response and more importantly the humanitarian efforts were launched to lend our meagre support to victims of the devastating disaster.

One year on to today, courtesy of Daily Mail, we take a look at the Tōhoku region of Japan as the great nation mourns the dearly departed in a comparison shot both then and now.

First up, we have a rush of optimism with baby Iroha Ishikawa, who has given a much-needed shot of hope into the thousands in manic search for their loved ones last year when she was rescued from the ruins by Japanese soldier Koji Chiba, three days into the all-consuming tsunami hit East Japan. Today, baby Iroha reunited with her saviour to commemorate the anniversary of the disaster.

Yuko Sugimoto, whose shot of standing amid a massive pile of debris was well-known to many, is with her son Raito in the exact same spot of the photo taken a year ago.

Kesennuma, then and now.

The card, the ship, as well as the building were removed one year one.

Kesennuma then and now.

The shelves which went empty soon after the crisis broke out, are obviously all filled up now.

A replica of the Statue of Liberty still stands in Ishinomaki.
