Dark Shadows: New Set Images - Undead Monday

Posted by Grey Monday, May 7, 2012

With Tim Burton and Johnny Depp's Dark Shadows set to be released this weekend, we take a look at the gothic dramedy film this Undead Monday.

Hot on the heels of the all-consuming war path of the box-office records-breaking Marvel Studios' The Avengers, we truly empathise the plight of whichever blockbuster film that is coming right next. And here we have a challenger to the box-office champion throne this weekend, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp's big screen adaptation of 1960s gothic soap opera "Dark Shadows."

All things considered, we maintained our earlier opinions that things does not boder well for the film that has been coined as a "gothic dramedy film." Can Johnny Depp turned on his charisma to the eleven in his take as the classic vampire, Barnabas Collins? Will the prospect of Burton and Seth Grahame-Smith's take on one of the most beloved cult TV series in the 1960s - 70s be enticing enough for all? Can the remarkable cast featuring Eva Green, Jonny Lee Miller, Michelle Pfeiffer, Chloƫ Moretz, Helena Bonham Carter, Jackie Earle Haley apart from Depp himself be enough to take the game to The Avengers, another with a similarly ensemble cast? We shall see.

Ahead of the release of the film, Warner Bros. Pictures has released a batch of hi-res set images from the film with Burton himself in the mix. Hit the jump to check them out.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet—or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth’s ne’er-do-well brother, Roger Collins, (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger’s precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David’s new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.

Dark Shadows is scheduled to be released on May 11th, 2012.
