Iron Man 3 Panel - SDCC 2012

Posted by Grey Sunday, July 15, 2012

We have covered the first portion of Marvel's Iron Man 3 panel at Hall H with the unveiling of the films set to be released as part of Marvel Cinematic Phase Two. Now it's back to business with Robert Downey Jr. joining the stage with director Shane Black, Jon Favreau, and Marvel boss Kevin Feige.

With San Diego Comic-Con International coming to a close later today, it goes without saying that Marvel has yet again ruled the show with an, pardon the pun, Iron fist, now that the Iron Man 3 panel is finally over. Even before the panel took place, the exhibit floor at Marvel's booth is already a winner in itself with the awesome display of every Iron Man armor from the films on display, much like how they are assembled in the first official image that was released last month. Thanks to IGN, here are some quick shot at the display.

And it only get better when the star of the gallery shows up. Courtesy of The Avengers Twitter, here's your first look at the brand new Mark VIII armor.

For those who would like to have a closer look, thank IGN for this close-up shot.

We have earlier covered the unveiling of the films set to be released as part of Marvel Cinematic Phase Two at Hall H with Marvel's Iron Man 3 panel at the Comic-Con. Following the departure of Edgar Wright after the unveiling of the upcoming Ant-Man, the centerstage was swiftly and effectively taken over by the arriving Robert Downey Jr. Ever the show-stealer, Downey Jr. came dancing and skipping to the tune of Luther Vandross's "Never Too Much" with one Iron Man glove on. Here's the clip of his entrance.

And with that, the first footage of Iron Man 3 was on. While we are certain that we will definitely get our hands on the awesome footage, let's have a recap of what was shown during the show.

First, we get to have a brief glimpse at Tony Stark's brand new thought-controlled Mark VIII armor that is every bit like the Extremis armor in the comic books. It was a light-hearted scene where we saw Stark going through some teething process with the assembly of the armor.

Next up, another light-hearted scene awaits as we saw Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau), who is no longer Tony's head of security, engages in a banter with Stark. And this is when things take a darker turn. The Malibu mansion of Tony Stark goes kaboom with choppers firing missiles at it, sending it down into the sea with Stark getting into his armor just in time while the fate of Gwyneth Paltrow's "Pepper" Potts, who was also on scene, is unknown. The assembly of armors is destroyed in this scene too.

A flash sequence continued from here with cut scenes of Don Cheadle's James "Rhodey" Rhodes / War Machine, Guy Pearce's Aldrich Killian, Rebecca Hall's Dr. Maya Hansen, James Badge Dale's Eric Savin / Coldblood, William Sadler's apparent President role, and last but certainly not the least, the unveiling and confirmation of Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin! Complete with his ten rings, long beard, and a hood while sitting atop a diabolical throne, the arch-nemesis of Iron Man in the comic book ended the clip with a final line, "Some people call me a terrorist. I consider myself a teacher. Lesson number one: Heroes. There is no such thing. As you cry out for mercy, you will be silenced."

When it comes to revealing awesome footage, Marvel has indeed cornered the market. Iron Man 3 looks to be one of the intriguing films in the immediate horizon of the gradually lucrative superhero film genre.

For those who would like to learn more on the interviews conducted at the panel, do head over to Collider for the full story. In the meantime, check out the following images of pictures from the panel.

Iron Man 3 is currently scheduled for release on May 3rd, 2013.
