Cloud Atlas: New Images

Posted by Grey Saturday, August 11, 2012

Brace yourself for one hell of a sight to behold. We were earlier astonished by the stunningly beautiful trailer of Cloud Atlas, the latest sci-fi epic drama directed by Lana Wachowski, Tom Tykwer, and Andy Wachowski. Now witness the bold directions the film employed with these recently-released official images.

Late last month, we were captivated by the breathtaking trailer of Cloud Atlas and were in awe with the grandeur visions and bold adaptation of the British author David Mitchell's 2004 novel of the same name. Nevertheless, we do have our concerns with how the star-studded international cast will switch between characters of different ethnics and race. Playing to the novel's theme that "Everything is Connected", the film will span across centuries from the 1800s to a post-apocalyptic future with the ensemble cast playing their different roles in these different eras.

And now, we can face the potentially perturbing effects of that notion with the release of official images on the film's official website. From numerous versions of Tom Hanks, we move on to a white Halle Berry, to a Korean Jim Sturgess, to post-apocalyptic bloodthirsty warlord-esque Hugh Grant, to a particularly cringe-inducing Hugo Weaving who presented to us his Asian version, and his horrifying Caucasian female version.

Here's the official synopsis from the book:

A reluctant voyager crossing the Pacific in 1850; a disinherited composer blagging a precarious livelihood in between-the-wars Belgium; a high-minded journalist in Governor Reagan's California; a vanity publisher fleeing his gangland creditors; a genetically modified "dinery server" on death-row; and Zachry, a young Pacific Islander witnessing the nightfall of science and civilisation — the narrators of Cloud Atlas hear each other's echoes down the corridor of history, and their destinies are changed in ways great and small.

In his captivating third novel, David Mitchell erases the boundaries of language, genre and time to offer a meditation on humanity's dangerous will to power, and where it may lead us.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

“Cloud Atlas” explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future. Action, mystery and romance weave dramatically through the story as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future.

Featuring a star-studded cast of Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Doona Bae, Ben Whishaw, James D’Arcy, Xun Zhou, Keith David, David Gyasi, Susan Sarandon, and Hugh Grant, Cloud Atlas will premièred at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, and is set to be released on October 26, 2012 in the United States.
