This October, Brad Pitt reunites with Andrew Dominik, the director of their critically acclaimed 2007 film, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, in Killing Them Softly, a film based on George V. Higgins novel, “Cogan’s Trade.” The Daily Zombies take a first look at the hard-boiled crime fiction film.
Being an adaptation of Ron Hansen's 1983 novel of the same name, director Andrew Dominik and Brad Pitt's 2007 Western drama, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, was no doubt a winner with the critics, having found their way to the top ten list of many films critics and perhaps more significantly, being recognized by the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures as one of the top 10 films of 2007. Nevertheless, we are certain any film enthusiasts would be familiar with online comments on how the dreadfully slow pace of the film. This is of course the truth for almost every good films out there especially given the theme of the film.
With Killing Them Softly, a crime fiction film based on George V. Higgins' 1974 novel, “Cogan’s Trade,” we are delighted to find a bold change of pace with the contemporary film infused with some much-needed black humor. Coupled with the stellar cast including some established gangland greats the like of James Gandolfini and Ray Liotta, we know we are in for an intriguing time for a good ol' tale of crime. The film has since garnered some international when it premiered in competition for the Palme d'Or at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.
With no further ado, hit the jump to check out the first trailer of the film, paced with the terrific tune of the immortal Johnny Cash.
Here are some of the posters for the film that have been released thus far.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:
Three dumb guys who think they’re smart rob a Mob protected card game, causing the local criminal economy to collapse. Brad Pitt plays the enforcer hired to track them down and restore order. KILLING THEM SOFTLY also features Richard Jenkins (THE VISITOR), James Gandolfini (“The Sopranos”), Ray Liotta (NARC), Scoot McNairy (MONSTERS), Ben Mendelsohn (ANIMAL KINGDOM), and Vincent Curatola (“The Sopranos”). Max Casella, Trevor Long, Slaine and Sam Shepard also make appearances. KILLING THEM SOFTLY is written for the screen and directed by Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford), and is based on the George V. Higgins novel, “Cogan’s Trade.” Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Steve Schwartz, Paula Mae Schwartz, and Anthony Katagas produced the film, with Roger Schwartz, Matthew Budman, Will French, and Douglas Saylor Jr. serving as co-producers. Director of photography Greig Fraser, and production and costume designer Patricia Norris led the creative behind-the-camera team. Casting for KILLING THEM SOFTLY was handled by Francine Maisler, and Brian A. Kates, A.C.E., served as editor. Executive producers are Megan Ellison, Marc Butan, Bill Johnson, Jim Seibel, Bob Weinstein, Harvey Weinstein, Adi Shankar and Spencer Silna.
And here’s the official synopsis for Cogan’s Trade, a novel by George V. Higgins and the source material for the film:
Cogan's Trade tracks Jackie Cogan’s career in a gangland version of law and order. For Cogan is an enforcer; and when the Mob’s rules get broken, he gets hired to ply his trade — murder. In the gritty, tough-talking pages of Higgins’s 1974 national best-seller, Cogan is called in when a high-stake card game under the protection of the Mob is heisted. Expertly, with a ruthless businessman’s efficiency, a shrewd sense of other people’s weaknesses, and a style as cold as his stare, Cogan moves with reliable precision to restore the status quo as ill-conceived capers and double-dealing shenanigans erupt into high-voltage violence.
Killing Them Softly is currently scheduled to be released on October 19, 2012.
