Action Movie Stars Assemble!

Stallone. Schwarzenegger. Willis. Van Damme. Statham. Li. Lundgren. and Chuck Norris!

The greatest and baddest B' graded action movies stars are back for war in the The Expendables 2.

Sure enough, the Summer blockbuster assault has kind of slowed down since Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. But this weekend, we have quite an interesting rosters of new releases with ParaNorman (which we have covered yesterday) and The Expendables 2, a film that might just be my personal most anticipated film ever if you were to ask me when I was nine. For the uninformed, we have Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Jet Li, and the man himself, Chuck Norris, standing side-by-side in one heck of a be-all-end-all, over-the-top action film.

For every kid growing up in the 90s who are accustomed to rock music, pro-wrestling, and good ol' fashioned B' graded action movies that are churned out from the Hollywood machine in hordes, a film assembling the above-mentioned cast is indeed a dream come true. While it is true that we have eventually grew to understand and appreciate cinematic art form and entertainment, 80s and 90s action film is a part of a Zeitgeist-like collective memory of a generation that nobody can ever take away.

And did we mentioned the fact that Chuck Norris himself, the human personification of iconic and cheesy 80s/90s action movies, will be in the film?

We have earlier covered on the involvement of the icon himself and are still in awe of potential scenes involving a roundhouse kick from Norris to Jet Li, or a Van Damme tiger punch onto the cybernetic guts of Schwarzenegger. On the overpowering strength of nostalgia, we are pretty certain of the success of the film with its usage of the tried-and-true "bigger, badder" formula for a continuing chapter of a franchise. Hell, this might just be the guilty pleasure of the year (but we all do remember what happened to our previous guilty pleasure of the year, Transformers: Dark of the Moon).

With the film being projected to relative success, Producer Avi Lerner has confirmed on the development of a third chapter of the franchise in an interview with Total Film:

"We’ve approached Clint Eastwood to be one of the guys, we’ve got a character in mind for him. We’re talking to Harrison Ford. [And we want] Wesley Snipes when he comes back from prison. I’ll give you one more name, we’ve got Nicolas Cage to play [one of the characters].

And we’re going to bring Mickey Rourke back, if he won’t be too crazy. I like Mickey. And of course, all the existing stars [will return]."

As crazy and impossible as that might sound, Eastwood in an all-out action film is an interesting notion to consider. Intriguingly, it was reported by Variety that in response to the film, an all-female version of The Expendables is currently in development. Now that would be a notable prospect as well. For now, submit to your inner action film-urges and tap out to nostalgia. It's raining action film heroes.

And here's a humorous fan-made trailer that celebrates the return of good ol' American machismo, violence and explosion in the film.

Here’s the synopsis for the film:

The Expendables are back and this time it’s personal… Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), Yin Yang (Jet Li), Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren),Toll Road (Randy Couture) and Hale Caesar (Terry Crews) -- with newest members Billy the Kid (Liam Hemsworth) and Maggie (Yu Nan) aboard -- are reunited when Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) enlists the Expendables to take on a seemingly simple job. The task looks like an easy paycheck for Barney and his band of old-school mercenaries. But when things go wrong and one of their own is viciously killed, the Expendables are compelled to seek revenge in hostile territory where the odds are stacked against them. Hell-bent on payback, the crew cuts a swath of destruction through opposing forces, wreaking havoc and shutting down an unexpected threat in the nick of time — five tons of weapons-grade plutonium, far more than enough to change the balance of power in the world. But that's nothing compared to the justice they serve against the villainous adversary who savagely murdered their brother.

That is done the Expendables way....

From Lionsgate and Millennium Films, THE EXPENDABLES 2 is the highly anticipated sequel to the summer 2010 worldwide box-office success ($274 million worldwide). The film stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, with Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger, with newest cast members Liam Hemsworth, martial arts legends Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Chinese actress Yu Nan as the first female EXPENDABLE. Directed by Simon West. Screenplay by Richard Wenk and Sylvester Stallone. Story by Ken Kaufman & David Agosto and Richard Wenk. Based on the Characters Created by David Callaham. Produced by Avi Lerner, Danny Lerner, Les Weldon, and Kevin King Templeton.
