The Last Stand: First Look

He's back! Former Mr. Universe, Hollywood icon, and Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger makes his return to the big screen in critically acclaimed Korean film-maker Kim Jee-woon’s US directorial debut, The Last Stand.

Continuing the week's trend of bucking on the nostalgic 80s/90s B' graded action movies sentiments (with the release of The Expendables 2), The Governator himself (whatever happened to that comic book/animation deal Arnie cut with Stan Lee), Arnold Schwarzenegger is back with a full-fledged leading role after sharing the screens with his fellow action movies icons comrade.

While it is inevitable and previously thought most likely forgettable, The Last Stand, Schwarzenegger's major effort back in the big screen, is perhaps more intriguing than initially thought being the US directorial debut of acclaimed Korean film-maker Kim Jee-woon. The director behind quirky cult films like The Quiet Family and The Foul King to more contemporary hits like A Tale of Two Sisters, A Bittersweet Life, The Good, the Bad, the Weird, and 2010's I Saw the Devil, Kim Jee-woon has been one of the most sought-after film-maker in South Korea.

While Schwarzenegger seemed pretty out of place in this relatively muted action film (given his history with crazy-assed, big budget ones), the explosive action sequences displayed in the trailer seems promising for the visionary director's US directorial debut. The Last Stand also stars Forest Whitaker, Eduardo Noriega, Rodrigo Santoro, , Jaimie Alexander, Peter Stormare, Zach Gilford, and Johnny Knoxville as yet another jack-ass character who was deputized by the hero (Walking Tall anyone?).

And here's the first poster for the film.

Here's the official synopsis of the film:

After leaving his LAPD narcotics post following a bungled operation that left him wracked with remorse and regret, Sheriff Ray Owens (Schwarzenegger) moved out of Los Angeles and settled into a life fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction. But that peaceful existence is shattered when Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega), the most notorious, wanted drug kingpin in the western hemisphere, makes a deadly yet spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy. With the help of a fierce band of lawless mercenaries led by the icy Burrell (Peter Stormare), Cortez begins racing towards the US-Mexico border at 250 mph in a specially-outfitted Corvette ZR1 with a hostage in tow. Cortez’ path: straight through Summerton Junction, where the whole of the U.S. law enforcement, including Agent John Bannister (Forest Whitaker) will have their final opportunity to intercept him before the violent fugitive slips across the border forever. At first reluctant to become involved, and then counted out because of the perceived ineptitude of his small town force, Owens ultimately rallies his team and takes the matter into his own hands, setting the stage for a classic showdown.

The Last Stand is scheduled to open on January 18, 2013.
