Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes - First Look

Posted by Grey Saturday, September 1, 2012

Snake is back! Naked Snake, AKA Big Boss, makes his triumphant return in Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. Here's your First Look at the title that will serve as a prologue to Metal Gear Solid 5 with the release of the stunning gameplay footage at the 2012 Penny Arcade Expo (PAX).

First unveiled at a private event in celebration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Metal Gear series by Konami last week, series creator Hideo Kojima officially announced the continuation of the Metal Gear Solid series and his return to the series he made famous with a truly stunning gameplay demo at the Metal Gear panel at the 2012 Penny Arcade Expo (PAX). Now that we got your attention, we believe we speak for the hordes of Metal Gear fans when we confessed that we are more than relieved to learnt that Kojima is back in the fold of one of the greatest video games franchises ever and that the good old stealth action pioneered by Metal Gear Solid, Kojima's 1998 epic action video game lives on.

As incredible as Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance got with its madcap slashing action (as evident from its recent Gamescom Trailer), there are certainly those who are divided by the significantly action-oriented title that is meant to be the successor to the critically acclaimed video game series by evolving from "Solid" to "Rising". And now with the confirmation of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, which will serve as a prologue to Metal Gear Solid 5 according to Kojima, we know we are in a for some epic video game action.

With no further ado, brace yourself for the breathtaking gameplay demo right after the jump and come back to join us for a closer look at the title.

Kojima certainly doesn't disappoint, isn't it?

Developed by Kojima Productions and produced by Konami, Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is the ninth entry in the Metal Gear series and as any self-respecting MGS fans would have gathered by now, the new title will be featuring Naked Snake (affectionately known as "Big Boss") as the game's protagonist. The first in the series to have an open world gameplay structure, the tremendous graphic power of Ground Zeroes is powered by Kojima Productions' Fox game engine that was first shown at Konami's conference at E3 2011. A current-gen, cross-platform game engine built by Kojima Productions to develop multiplatform games with a significantly shortened development time while maintaining its ability to scale for next-gen platforms as well.

Here are some of the official images released thus far (including the version without the logos as well).

So what else do we know about the ninth entry in the Metal Gear series? Accordingly, the title was meant "to evoke the feeling of the original Metal Gear Solid in the Fox Engine" with Kojima being the creator of the title personally. And here are some of the speculations formed based on the awesome gameplay footage which seriously looked more like a CG trailer, evident of the astonishing power of the game engine.

Shaking, moving cameras? According to Kojima, the seamless movement of the camera was intentional in an effort to convey the feeling of an open world structure.

First, we are introduced to "Omega", a military base that looked like a truly terrible place, making it likely to be one of the camps of the Les Enfant Terrible. And we are introduced to a likely villain of the game, a character with a stylish black hat and a terribly burnt, disfigured face. He appears to be hailing from an organization known as "XOF" (notably the reverse of FOX) and calls his soldiers "an army without a nation," a phrase we are familiar to by now. There have been rampant speculation that he could be Volgin, or even The Fury, who last encounter with flames in Metal Gear Solid 3 didn't turned out so well.

Next, the much-talked-about kid who many even speculated him as a young Raiden. Nevertheless, we are pretty certain this is Chico from Peace Walker. And for the uninformed, that's a Walkman. Yes, a Walkman with headphones previously plugged to the chest.

Here we get to understand what is going on in a mission debrief between Miller and Big Boss. The mission is to retrieve Paz (who is still alive) and Chico from Cuba. Talks of an imminent nuclear inspection at Mother Base is perhaps foreshadowing the scale of the threat this time round.

And here's the Boss. Big Boss.

Like any other open world structure games, players can choose car-jacking (or chopper-stealing) as the mode of transport while penetrating the base. Do beware of the music you play though. According to Kojima, loud music will get you spotted for obvious reasons.

And here are some of the other images from the gameplay demo.

Apart from the announcement of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes at the Metal Gear 25th anniversary event, a new mobile entry entitled "Metal Gear Solid: Social Ops" was also for a late 2012 release. Here's the promotional image featuring Big Boss, Old Snake, The Boss, Ocelot, Kazuhira Miller, Eva, Raiden, Meryl Silverberg, Colonel Volgin, the Cobra troops, Beauty and the Beast models, Metal Gear REX, and the Cocoon.

While the release date of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes was unannounced, it is expected that more details will be unveiled soon. We here at The Daily Zombies just can't wait.
